Unsanctioned “Lavish Effect” Pool Party Sparks Massive Police Response in New Milford

New Milford NJ, An unauthorized late-night party at a Bergen County swim club descended into chaos last Sunday, drawing a massive police response from six neighboring municipalities and leaving local officials demanding answers.
New Milford Mayor Michael Putrino publicly condemned the incident, describing the chaotic evening as an “absolute embarrassment” to the borough, swim club members, and local residents.
Multi-Town Police Force Disperses Large Crowd
Trouble began around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, when officers were dispatched to the New Milford Swim Club following reports of a large physical altercation.
According to New Milford Police Chief Brian Clancy, the situation quickly escalated, requiring mutual aid from multiple surrounding law enforcement agencies. Officers from River Edge, Oradell, Bergenfield, Dumont, Teaneck, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department responded to help disperse the disorderly crowd.

Borough Denies Knowledge or Approval of the Event
The event was promoted publicly as the “Lavish Effect Pool Party.” However, municipal officials emphasized that the gathering was entirely unauthorized.
“The event… was not authorized by the Borough,” Mayor Putrino wrote in a statement shared on social media. “Further, the Club did not make the Borough or the Police Department aware that this event was taking place.”
Mayor Putrino noted that the New Milford Swim Club is a privately operated organization that has leased borough-owned land since 1959. He acknowledged existing tensions between borough officials and club leadership regarding overall operations, while reassuring residents that local leadership values the benefits a community pool brings to the town.
“We recognize the value that a community swim club can provide, and we are sympathetic to the many New Milford residents who are members, employees, volunteers, and supporters of the club,” Putrino added. “However, the event resulted in serious incidents, including reported disorderly, illegal, and inappropriate conduct.”
As the investigation continues, borough leadership is assessing operational oversights to ensure community safety and prevent similar unsanctioned events in the future.
