Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 9:00 AM for a hands-on volunteer initiative to preserve one of Ridgewood’s most distinctive historic features: our red Gamewell fire alarm boxes.
Event Details & Volunteer Information
Deputy Mayor Pamela Perron, the Ridgewood A.M. Rotary Club, and the Village’s Signal Division are partnering to host a community paint day to restore these iconic emergency signal boxes located throughout the Village.

Location: Ridgewood, NJ (assignments provided upon arrival/registration)

Age Requirement: Participants must be 18 years of age or older

Supplies: All paint, brushes, gear, and instructions will be provided on-site
Why Restore the Gamewell Fireboxes?
First introduced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Gamewell call boxes served as the backbone of municipal fire dispatching before modern cellular technology. Today, they stand as cherished landmarks of American industrial heritage.
By volunteering, you will help protect these historic fixtures from weather wear while keeping Ridgewood’s streetscapes vibrant and well-maintained. No prior painting experience is required—just bring your enthusiasm to support the Village!
