Within 45 minutes of the polls closing, Cory Booker, the Democratic mayor of Newark, and Steve Lonegan, a Republican former mayor of Bogota, were the apparent winners of Tuesday’s primaries for U.S. Senate.

Booker beat Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver of Essex County and Reps. Frank Pallone of Monmouth County and Rush Holt of Mercer County to win the Democratic nomination.

Lonegan topped Alieta Eck, a Somerset County physician, to win the Republican nomination. Lonegan had 81 percent of the vote.

While the fiery conservative Republican wasted no time attacking his opponent in the special election that is only 63 days away, Booker focused his remarks on cutting through the partisan gridlock in Washington to move the country and state forward.

  1. Two extremist and most NJ voters state they are in the middle. Maybe a good independent candidate can end the democratic/republican reign.
