Do you really think it is worth saving?  Very little of it is original.  Each add-on is either up a step or down a step.  I know Isabella has told me that an historic house does not have to be handicapped accessible.  If that is true, maybe it is savable but at what cost?  And for what use? To restore it for the idea of restoring it is really of no use to anyone.  And no one has ever seen that famous “Shedler bald eagle.”   The property does have an occasional turkey buzzard, does it qualify for special treatment?  If the town does put a smaller ball field and a park, it will have to put up barriers on the highway.  That would be the only way they could safely use the field or park

  1. No, it has no architectural significance and is not worth saving. The property is of truly marginal utility other than as a buffer with respect to road noise and car pollution from the (uphill) northbound lane of Route 17. All things considered, the idea of putting a ball field there seems like a poor one. An enormous noise barrier would be needed to render the property habitable by ballplayers and spectators. That same wall, as it turns out, would block most of the early evening sunlight in April and early May, significantly curtailing the property’s primary intended use as a weekday venue for 6pm games. It’s a catch-22 that can’t be resolved. The village should put this property up for sale with no strings attached to the highest bidder and dump this dog with fleas pronto.

    Sorry neighbors, a taxpayer funded buffer is a non-starter.
    Complaining about road noise during a sporting event is borderline comical.

  4. With grant monies, donations and fundraisers, the Schedler House will become an asset to the community just as the Stable has. There will be a park and recreational field for our children and the buffer of trees will remain in place with no need for a giant wall that would cost the tax payers somewhere in the range of a million plus. Finally, anything Ms. Altano is in favor of has my vote. Her expertise in urban planning, architecture, art etc. make her invaluable on our Planning Board and for anything else that will enhance our community.

    That’s when Government taxes you, and then you kiss their ass to get a few pennies back and you think you won the lottery.

  6. agree with 9:10. We paid $7 million in tax payer dollars for this property. Sell it and let someone build what they want there.

  7. I assume 11:14 has been to the house and property. A wall would be required. A car ended up in a Queens Ct backyard before the wall was installed. And a truck went through the wall at the 17N exit to Glen. Want that to happen while a ball team is there? Also, the document presented to save the house clearly states that it would be necessary to enter the house to see if the roof and basement are actually original or has the house has been totally rebuilt at one time. Has that been done? What were the results?

  8. There was once a broken down house in a stream, laying almost on its side; the windows were broken. A group wanted to save it, but the PRC board said it was worthless, and should be torn down to make a bigger field. A waste of money, a useless property, foolish, don’t go for financing, all said about the Lester Stable. Yes.

  9. Raze the home for safety reasons and chalk the millions spent to acquire it as lost money. Let any vegetation to continue to grow and don’t waste any more time or money on it.

  11. The word “luddite” is thrown around too much. It has come to mean that anyone who sees beauty, charm, meaning, any kind of significance from past traditions and ways of life, must make way for towns to be congested , polluted, and basically undesirable places to live.

  12. Nice try, 1:40, plucking the heartstrings and all. The Schedler property and the Lester farm are not comparable in terms of their historical significance to local residents.

The following info was taken from the 2010 “Open Space Committee Report to The Village Council”: The Village has been highly successful in securing state and county Green Acres Funds of approx. 5.1 million dollars toward the 10 million dollar acquisition cost of the three properties: Habernickel, Schedler and expansion of Citizens Park. We still remain eligible for additional grants in the amount of 2.1 million dollars for the properties. At a previous council meeting at the time, former VM James Ten Hove said the price of a large field at Schedler would be about 9 million dollars. The council dismissed any development there due to the cost and lack of funds. When I hear people say we paid over 7 million dollars of tax payers money for the Schedler property, I think they must be referring to ” alternative facts.”

  15. I still want to know if the county Historian was ever able to go inside the property and what the result was. If the house isn’t original–and he stated in his letter that he “assumed” it was but there was no real way of telling it was an original or a rebuilt without going inside. We certainly don’t want to waste the money restoring a piece of junk if it is not actually historical. Would one of the organizers of the “Save Shedler” please print an answer? T
