Sun Belt Exodus: Samsung Abandons New Bergen County HQ for Texas After Less Than a Year

Englewood Cliffs NJ, In a massive blow to the Garden State economy, consumer electronics giant Samsung Electronics Co. has announced plans to relocate its U.S. subsidiary headquarters from Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, to Plano, Texas.

The shocking announcement, delivered to employees on May 29 and officially confirmed on June 1, comes less than a year after state and local officials celebrated the grand opening of the company’s multi-million dollar Englewood Cliffs facility on September 22, 2025.

Moving 1,000 Jobs to Plano

Samsung plans to complete the transition to the Lone Star State by the end of 2026. Roughly 1,000 employees currently work out of the Englewood Cliffs campus. While the majority are expected to be reassigned to the new Plano headquarters, a small skeleton crew will remain in New Jersey to support minimal local operations.

The tech giant has not yet disclosed how many local positions will be eliminated entirely rather than relocated.

Breaking a Deep Cultural Connection to Bergen County

Beyond the devastating economic impact and the hit to Englewood Cliffs’ municipal tax base, the relocation cuts deep into a prominent local community. Samsung is leaving behind Bergen County, which holds a historic demographic distinction:

  • Third-highest total population of Korean Americans of any county in the nation (more than 64,000 residents).

  • The highest percentage of Korean American residents of any county in the United States.

  • Massive, thriving enclaves in neighboring towns like Palisades Park and Fort Lee.

The Texas Strategy: Consolidating Tech & Manufacturing

According to reporting by tech industry publication Tech Times, the decision to move to Plano allows Samsung to consolidate its executive leadership alongside its massive Texas manufacturing hubs:

  1. Austin, Texas: An active semiconductor fabrication plant operated by Samsung since 1996.

  2. Taylor, Texas: A cutting-edge, multi-billion dollar advanced foundry on track to begin operations by the end of 2026.

Texas remains a fierce competitor for major tech companies due to its highly attractive fiscal landscape, boasting no corporate tax rate and no state income tax.

“Decades of Anti-Business Policies”

The high-profile corporate departure has reignited fierce criticism over New Jersey’s business climate. The state currently holds the highest corporate tax rate in the nation at 11.5%.

Michele Siekerka, President and CEO of the New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA), expressed deep disappointment but noted the move was entirely predictable.

“These are the results of decades of anti-business policies in the state. These are not accidents, nor are they coincidences,” Siekerka stated. “However, this is also an opportunity. Governor Sherrill has signaled the need and want to improve our business climate, to reduce costs, red tape and other permitting and regulatory burdens.”

Samsung’s departure follows another staggering corporate loss earlier this year, when ExxonMobil unanimously voted to move its operations to Texas, ending a 144-year history in New Jersey. According to the NJBIA, New Jersey’s roster of Fortune 500 companies has plummeted from 22 in 2018 down to just 15 today.

  1. Where’s the part of the story about more condos?

read the story on the blog about the Woodcliff Lake BMW property being leveled to bring in 370 condos plus shops. Including 26 supportive housing units and a total of 74 affordable housing units,

    1. Or the Mercedes-Benz departure from Montavale, NJ, years ago. This Samsung departure is just the beginning. California east.

      1. No corporation in their right mind would locate here. I’d suspect when leases are up, more corporations will leave. All the big earners spend 181 days “exiled’ out of state to avoid the tax bite. (during those 181 days NJ businesses suffer a loss of their discretionary spending, and the state misses out on sales taxes!) Who will be left to fund the radical left wing idiots that are the majority one party rule in Trenton?
