Newark NJ, A routine crowd-control operation outside a Newark detention facility took a dark turn when a demonstrator allegedly unleashed a barrage of violent death threats against a federal officer.
Thanks to rapid deployment and advanced tracking tech, federal law enforcement tracked down the suspect across state lines in less than a day. The arrest marks a sharp escalation in the federal government’s crackdown on violent agitators targeting law enforcement.
Social Media Video Captures Graphic Threats
On May 27, 2026, a tense demonstration unfolded outside the Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, New Jersey. Amid the crowd, 27-year-old Nicholas Matthew Scelfo of Brooklyn, New York, allegedly confronted a U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) officer.
According to federal court documents and video evidence posted to social media, Scelfo did not just protest—he explicitly targeted the officer’s family. The complaint states that Scelfo screamed:
“I’ll kill your whole fucking family! Your whole fucking family is dead! Your children, your wife, all dead! I have your face, motherfucker! You’re dead! Dead!”
Caught by AI: FBI Uses Facial Recognition to Corner Suspect
While the suspect managed to leave the scene and cross back into New York, his anonymity didn’t last long. Law enforcement leveraged cutting-edge investigative tools to swiftly close the case.
FBI Director Kash Patel revealed that agents used facial recognition technology to analyze the social media footage, identifying and locating Scelfo within 24 hours of the incident.
“Let this be a message to any criminal actor who may try something similar: you touch a cop, and this FBI will put you down,” Patel warned following the arrest.
The operation required massive inter-state coordination, pulling in special agents from the FBI’s Newark and New York teams, the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the New York Police Department (NYPD).
DHS Warns of 8,000% Surge in Death Threats
The incident highlights a volatile environment surrounding immigration enforcement facilities. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin spoke out on the staggering rise in hostility toward federal personnel.
According to Mullin, ICE officers are currently facing an unprecedented 8,000% increase in death threats nationwide. Officers are routinely subjected to physical assaults, targeted doxxing campaigns, and direct threats against their spouses and children while carrying out their duties.
Federal prosecutors emphasized that these actions completely cross the line from constitutionally protected free speech into serious criminal territory.
Severe Penalties and Bail Conditions
Scelfo was officially arrested for influencing, impeding, and retaliating against a federal officer by threat. He made his initial court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Stacey D. Adams in Newark federal court.
While he was released on a $100,000 bond, his freedom comes with strict parameters. The court has entirely banned Scelfo from returning to the Delaney Hall property or contacting any involved parties.
If convicted, the federal threat charge carries severe legal consequences, including a maximum term of up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The case is currently being prosecuted by the National Security Unit in Newark.
