Principal of Ridgewood high school just sent a memo to all families defending mid term exams. Teachers didn’t want to give them but are mandated. He apparently is ok with student grades being reduced from a high B to a C, just to check the box. He then suggests that stress caused by mid term exams is exceeded by excessive screen time and that families need to address this at home as a first priority. Maybe reducing the 3+ hrs of homework each night on chrome books is a good start.
Wonder if insulting emails like this are reviewed and approved by the superintendent ..or does the principal just fly solo.
And perhaps the supposed reduction in grades would be a more accurate indicator of their actual aptitude? Who cares that teachers don’t want to administer the exams. The teachers can hardly be bothered to show up half the time anyway. Screw them. And so what if the precious little darlings are doing 3+ hours of homework each night? (Which they are not.) What else should they be doing? Playing video games? It’s not like they need to milk the cows or clean out the stables. Let them do homework from the minute they get home until they go to sleep. Maybe they’ll actually learn something and be better prepared for when their lives actually get rough. Boo hoo.
you should address at BOE meetings. Sounds harsh with little advanced notice, so perhaps they can get some professional help first, then make recommendations to parents with plenty of advanced notice. taking away priviledges also causes anxiety and if you are trying to manage expectations, i would think with the brain trust that was promised to you as a parent from the BOE, this is a no brainer.
the boe is led by the teachers union candidates, one who claimed we shouldn’t care about test scores…complete waste of time
This guy sounds like a real asshole, how about reducing the homework that’s what the stress is coming from. It’s ridiculous. No one needs three hours of homework every night. It’s bullshit.
some teachers were creative by giving group projects as a midterm…that is a teacher that gets it.
preparation for college and the many group projects students will complete; not crushing their gpa for their college applications
and yes hw at rhs is 3 hrs per night
Oh, really, is the 3 hours set by a watch? Do they have to clock in and clock out? Is the principle on Zoom for the entire time making sure they don’t leave the kitchen table? Does the 3 hours include bathroom breaks, or do they have to pause the mandated timer and reset it when they return? Can they spread the 3 hours out over the span of the evening so long as the 3 hours of homework for each student regardless of speed and ability is completed by 11:59PM?
Oh, the stress! Give me a break. Maybe tell the little whiners (and the big ones) to stop wilting like delicate little pansies and work through the “stress” — it’s called life and it makes you stronger. If you’re struggling to learn, good. You should be. That’s your job as a student. You literally have nothing more important to do.
None of your kids have three hours plus homework every night. If they do, they’re goofing off and mismanaging their time. Or they’re just rank imbeciles and it doesn’t matter anyway because their uncle will get them a cushy job in the company. Quit coddling them.
what a condescending memo from the principal….step away from the keyboard and think next time
Presidents’ Day combines Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays. This year Ridgewood is celebrating Abe’s birthday twice. Maybe because it’s a Leap Year.
Sounds like a reasonable memo from the principal.
Sounds like Teachers, students and parents don’t want to put in the effort to get educated properly.
Pathetic.
Every day we are becoming weaker and weaker as a nation and a people.
Surprised this comment doesn’t have 7 billion down votes from the local “rich and stupid” ostrich crowd. Of course they’re going to resent anyone placing the responsibility squarely where it belongs.
