GLOBAL TECH NEWS – The start of the work week was marred by widespread digital chaos after Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world’s leading cloud services platform, experienced a significant outage early Monday morning. The disruption caused widespread connectivity issues, taking down or affecting operations for a number of high-profile companies and popular consumer apps.

The outage, centered in the critical US-EAST-1 Region, began around 3:11 a.m. ET, leading to “increased error rates and latencies” across multiple AWS services.

Which Major Sites and Apps Were Impacted?

The ripple effects of the AWS failure were felt globally, impacting services that rely on the giant’s cloud infrastructure. Among the major platforms hit were:

  • Video Games: Gaming giant Fortnite
  • Social Media: Popular app Snapchat
  • Design Platform: Graphic design powerhouse Canva (which confirmed the issue on X, stating, “Our cloud provider is currently experiencing problems.”)
  • Financial & Tech: Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, trading app Robinhood, and AI startup Perplexity all attributed their service interruptions to the AWS issue.

The Technical Cause: DNS Failure

In its morning update at 6:35 a.m. ET, AWS confirmed the root cause was an “underlying DNS issue.” DNS, or Domain Name System, is essentially the internet’s phonebook, translating website names into IP addresses. A failure in this fundamental service can cascade quickly, causing widespread connection problems.

By 6:35 a.m. ET, AWS announced that the DNS issue was “fully mitigated,” and most service operations were returning to normal. However, the company cautioned that some requests might still be throttled as they work toward full resolution.

A Reminder of Cloud Vulnerability

This outage is the most significant internet disruption since last year’s highly publicized CrowdStrike malfunction, which disabled technology systems in hospitals, banks, and airports worldwide.

The recurring nature of these events underscores the sheer scale and reliance on a handful of massive cloud providers. When a service like AWS—which hosts a substantial portion of the modern internet—experiences even a brief hiccup, the impact is felt instantly across commerce, entertainment, and essential services.

Businesses worldwide are now reviewing their cloud redundancy strategies to mitigate risk from future, similar disruptions.
