Ridgewood NJ, Ever since Amazon opened its first Amazon Go cashierless convenience store to the public at the start of 2018, its executives have been brushing off questions about whether they planned to introduce the same technology to Whole Foods.
There can be little doubt this is the beginning of the end for cashiers in Whole Foods. And this was almost certainly the plan all along announcing Wednesday that the “Just Walk Out” cashierless experience first introduced at Amazon Go convenience stores will now start to roll out at the larger chain.
The technology relies on an array of cameras and sensors to track what shoppers are selecting and is currently in use at more than two dozens Go stores as well as several Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S. and the U.K. The technology in a larger-scale grocery store turned into a tourist attraction when a new Fresh location opened in Bellevue, Wash., this summer.
On Wednesday September 8th, 4:15 p.m. PT: United Food and Commercial Workers President Marc Perrone said in a statement Wednesday that Amazon was bringing its “ruthless anti-worker playbook, pushing automation at all costs” to Whole Foods and that essential workers and their families would pay the price.
Perrone called “Just Walk Out” tech a “job-killing cashierless technology.”
Amazon said in its blog post that the two Whole Foods stores introducing the tech will “employ a comparable number of Team Members as existing Whole Foods Market stores of similar sizes.” How Team Members in the store spend their time is “simply shifting,” Amazon said, “allowing them to spend even more time interacting with customers and delivering a great shopping experience.”
I believe that cashless walk out is already being practiced by many people in many stores on the west coast.
If you recall, Murphy made the statement in his first campaign that he wants the PDRNJ to be the California of the east coast.
That store is so overrated. Too expensive. Yes it’s very clean, great food, great specialty food, but you cannot shop there for typical items Overpriced.
The criminals are thanking God everyday that everyone is mandated to wear masks.
I stopped shopping at Whole Foods the day I read that Jeff Bezos had bought it.
Thanks to Phil Murphy’s relaxed policies on crime in NJ the criminals will probably interpret Just Walk Out as exactly that.
Yes just like in California where criminals load up a big plastic garbage bag with store merchandise, laugh at the store security guard and…just walk out. Store security guards don’t call the police anymore in California (many such videos are online) because the police have been told to stand down and let these thugs walk out (with up to $1,000 worth of stolen merchandise).
With Murphy already governing NJ much like California and a majority Democrat NJ State Senate that licks Murphy’s boots you can see the writing on the wall…NJ crime will be on the rise, the police won’t be able to do their jobs properly and the courts will be restricted.
We can help to stop this from happening in NJ by voting Murphy OUT and also by voting OUT Democrat NJ State Senators this November.
We need elected officials in NJ to seriously support law and order and stop coddling criminals as “misguided souls”.
I want my property taxes to support keeping my family, my property, my neighbors and my community safe from crime. “Progressive” Democrat politicians may disagree with that and that’s one reason (of many) why I don’t vote for them.
Paterson has been doing this for many years.
