Washington DC, Amy Coney Barrett becomes the 115th justice to serve on the Supreme Court, succeeding the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and cementing a 6-3 conservative majority on the court.

President Trump looked on as Justice Clarence Thomas administered the official constitutional oath to Barrett before a crowd on the South Lawn of the White House, roughly an hour after the GOP-controlled Senate confirmed Trump’s third nominee to the high court in a largely party-line vote. They stood on the White House balcony, which was decorated with American flags.

“This is a momentous day for America, for the United States Constitution, and for the fair and impartial rule of law,” Trump, who had just returned from campaigning in Pennsylvania, said in prepared remarks before Thomas administered the oath. “She is one of our nation’s most brilliant legal scholars and she will make an outstanding justice on the highest court in our land.”Barrett spoke following the oath, thanking Trump and Senate leaders and emphasizing the need for judges to put aside their personal policy views.

After a unanimous vote by the Judiciary Committee last week, the Senate just confirmed Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amy Coney Barrett to become the 115th Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

“Having confirmed her to the Circuit Court in 2017 with bipartisan support, the Senate has already undertaken a thorough and rigorous review of her record,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said after President Trump made the nomination last month.

Throughout Justice Barrett’s career, she has faithfully upheld the U.S. Constitution as written. The American Bar Association gave Barrett its highest rating, and she has an impressive track record across the legal profession—as a judge, professor, and litigator.

Most important, she will bring a valuable new perspective to our nation’s High Court:

Justice Barrett is the first mother of school-aged children to become a Supreme Court Justice. She is also only the fifth woman ever to serve.

As the mother of a child with special needs, she understands the issues and concerns confronting our nation’s most vulnerable people.

Justice Barrett is the only current justice to have a law degree from a school other than Harvard or Yale. She graduated at the top of her class from Notre Dame Law School in Indiana.

Justice Barrett has made her philosophy clear: She will not legislate from the bench. “Courts have a vital responsibility to the rule of law, which is critical to a free society, but courts are not designed to solve every problem or right every wrong in our public life,” she said during her confirmation hearings.

“The policy decisions and value judgments of government must be made by the political branches, elected by and accountable to the people,” she added.

One letter—written by Justice Barrett’s former law clerks—calls her approach principled and independent-minded. “Judge Barrett taught us that a good judge will not always like the results she reaches; a good judge goes wherever the law leads,” it says.

Justice Barrett is the very model of a sympathetic yet impartial judge, according to her colleagues at Notre Dame Law School. She is exactly the type of person whom the American people deserve to have sitting on their Supreme Court.

“If we are to protect our institutions, and protect the freedoms, and protect the rule of law that’s the basis for the society and the freedom that we all enjoy—if we want that for our children and our children’s children—then we need to participate in that work,” Justice Barrett said.

  3. She managed deranged senators and dem media well. A lot better than cry baby cavanaugh. Back in the civilized days Supreme Court attracted individuals from different walks of life, not just career lawyers. It’s common sense that’s expected from that body, not technocracy. She’ll do well to uphold the constitution. And that’s all that matters.

  5. Vast majority of Americans don’t want to move to the kind of forward envisioned by progressives. And many that do, do so only because they are young and inexperienced.

  9. LOL: “She is a rational thoughtful, fair reasoned jurist who follows the law… a nightmare for (the agenda driven) democrats.”

All parties are “agenda-driven”. Shit – ACB wouldn’t be on the court at all right now if it wasn’t for the GOP’s concerted efforts (one might say, “agenda”) to tilt the judiciary rightward.

It is also incredibly disingenuous to suggest that either party is not “following the law”, at least in the judicial sense — the point of SCOTUS is to adjudicate cases that challenge existing laws, and those challenges come from both the right and left. As the most basic example, the ACA is currently a law; the GOP does not want to follow that law and wish to overturn it via a SCOTUS ruling, and they have conveniently tilted SCOTUS to deliver that — wait for it — agenda !

This is where you are wrong, but I understand why you think this way –

The Democrats have always been “the ends justify the means” and “we must relentlessly drive towards a socialist ideal regardless of the means and tactics used”.

The Republicans have always been “follow the rules”, “law and order” and “win change via the existing system”

That is why you see the court system as another avenue to implement your agenda.
The Republicans see it as a place to resolve issues fairly, according to the law.

Democrats place activist operatives on the court.
Republicans place arbiters of truth on the court.
This is why the country continues to ratchet to the left.
If Republicans placed activist operatives onthe court the country would not be drifting to the left for decades and decades.
