perhaps some innovative ideas on parking?

(that just might get done this century)

  1. >Whether that heralded parking garage ever gets built, the downtown parking ordinance is anti-consumer and anti-worker. The “No Repeat Parking” provision is the most hostile part of the law.

I once had a meter guy tell me that once my two-hour meter was up in a municipal lot, I couldn’t even move my car to a different spot in that same lot without getting a ticket.

Here’s the message I get from that: “We’d like you to shop and/or work in here, but please limit such activities to two hours. If you must stay longer than that, we’re going tax you an extra $20 (at least!) for the privilege.”

If the Village Council wants to dispel the notion that fines are a built-in cost of the consumer and employee experience in Ridgewood (how else are they supposed to pay all those six-figure salaries?), they would strike down the “No Repeat Parking” portion of the ordinance.

As long as people re-feed the meters before their initial time runs out, they should be allowed to stay in one parking spot for as long as they want to shop. Let them spend their money in the local stores rather than at the Violations Bureau.

So how ’bout it? Anybody want to get behind this idea, or offer a better one?
