PATERSON, NJ — A new 42-inch water main break in Paterson is threatening to leave large parts of the city without water, just two weeks after a separate major break disrupted service across multiple North Jersey communities.

The latest break occurred on August 24 at the intersection of North First and Arch streets, according to the Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC). Crews are currently working to isolate the line, but residents in the Riverside section of Paterson may experience little or no water service until repairs are complete.

“PVWC crews are closing valves to isolate a 42-inch water main break at North 1st Street and Arch Street,” the commission said. “There is currently no estimated timeframe for repairs.”

This incident comes shortly after the August 8 Hinchliffe Stadium water main break, which forced thousands of residents across Paterson, Prospect Park, Haledon, and North Haledon under a boil water advisory. While that advisory has since been lifted for most customers, some neighborhoods—including areas east of Spruce Street and west of Route 20 in Paterson, as well as Prospect Park and Manchester Utilities Authority customers—remain under restrictions.

Meanwhile, Ridgewood Water is asking its customers to conserve water to help supply neighboring Fair Lawn, which is also affected by the disruption. A temporary interconnection is being created to divert water if necessary, but officials warn that normal supply levels may drop in Ridgewood until the situation is resolved.

With two major water main breaks in less than three weeks, residents and local officials are expressing growing concern over the aging infrastructure that supplies water to North Jersey communities.

For now, PVWC urges residents in affected areas to conserve water, prepare for low pressure or outages, and follow any boil water advisories still in place.

  1. Why are we playing ”santa claus” with our limited inferior water supply?
These towns abut the private water companies that have sufficient amounts from resevoirs

  3. Ageing infrastructure happening everywhere, whenever all around us.
Get used to more to come, we are not immune. You won’t need to worry about having the “perfect” lawn and wished you and everyone conserved their water usage.
Shouldn’t be “Voluntary water restrictions”, we ARE in Mandatory Stage II Restrictions. Notice there are Many NEW underground sprinkler systems being installed throughout Ridgewood, Glen Rock. Is the VOR allowing this? and are using them at 6 PM. ?? What happened to “code” warnings?
Also, Overuse of pesticides harms the environment and water.
Water is vital for life, and fires, don’t waste it.

  4. Unfortunately everyone needs to buy water from them. This what happens when the maintenance funds have been “misplaced” the last 50 years.

  5. Stop watering your lawn you assholes

    1. Nice, real nice.

      1. Yea, YOU

    2. For months, in Glen Rock on Prospect St., 2 houses next to each other, automatic underground sprinkler systems run Every day at 6 p.m., front, sides, back. in the 490’s -500’s area. One has a lawn display circle of American Flags in front.
Sometimes, starts late afternoon, or later evenings, one near fire hydrant. Deer try to cross over busy road from woods to get to green grass. Always honk the horn to warn deer and wake up people watering. Why hasn’t code enforcement been done?
Some newly remodeled big houses on Ackerman, Glen Rock before the Dunkin D. area, have underground sprinklers running at 6 pm also. Many others in Glen Rock.

  6. Talk about assholes, it’s amazing how many people in the lawns section of town, have fake well signs in front of their houses. These people are full of shit we know who they are.☠️

  7. They must have deep wells to get the refresh rates they need to support sprinklers…..
