Twp. of Washington NJ, an Apple Montessori school will replace the former Charlie Brown’s restaurant at 95 Linwood Avenue in Twp.of Washington , after months of debate over what to do with the dormant property.
On Monday night the Apple Montessori school project was approved by the township Zoning Board of Adjustment , months after the town backed off on controversial proposals to build a police station or Department of Public Works facility at the very heavily trafficked location. The Township dropped plans to buy the property for $1.3 million last summer and now, the private-school chain will raze the existing Charlie Brown’s at 95 Linwood Ave., just across the Paramus border, and replace it with a two-story, 19,000-square-foot daycare building.
Apple Montessori operates more than a dozen schools in North Jersey, caring for children who range from infants to 6 years old. It’s estimated that 154 students will attend the school once it’s complete. No timeline for the project was discussed at Monday’s meeting. The Charlie Brown’s closed in 2020, a victim of the COVID pandemic.
Apple Montessori is a private school network that offers Montessori-based education to children from infancy through eighth grade. Founded in 1972, Apple Montessori currently operates multiple campuses in New Jersey, USA, and has a curriculum that focuses on fostering independence, creativity, and critical thinking skills in children.
The Montessori method of education was developed by Maria Montessori in the early 1900s and is based on the idea that children learn best through self-directed activity and hands-on exploration. In a Montessori classroom, children are encouraged to work at their own pace and to explore the materials in the classroom independently, with guidance from a trained Montessori teacher.
Apple Montessori schools offer a range of programs, including infant and toddler care, preschool, and elementary and middle school education. The curriculum includes math, science, language arts, social studies, and foreign language, as well as art, music, and physical education. The schools also offer extracurricular activities and enrichment programs, such as coding and robotics, dance, and drama.
Apple Montessori is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and its campuses have been recognized for excellence by various organizations, including the New Jersey Department of Education and the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
