Westwood NJ, one would think after the nursing and Veteran Home fiasco’s during the COVID-19 pandemic the medical profession would be more on guard as to the care of the elderly .
Now comes new allegations and a warning from a Twp. of Washington resident to the elderly and their families: Hackensack Meridian Hospital Pascack Valley in Westwood administers sedatives, without consent of the patients or surrogates, to keep the patients “docile”. If the elderly patients are constantly in a lethargic state, less attention will be given to them as well as a cut in staff numbers.
This leads to serious complications to the elderly. The FDA, AMA, as well as Harvard School Of Medicine and other established organizations warn against psychotic ” black box” drugs given to the elderly, where there is no benefit to the health of the elderly patients and will cause serious complications.
The Bergen resident alleges that ,”I found that this hospital does not treat their non- terminally ill elderly patients with the healthcare they need for survival. Our precious elderly are “being made comfortable” (cutting services because of age alone, not because of the status of health of the elderly patient).

Thank you for the article on Hackensack Meridian Hospital and their treatment towards the elderly. Their must be reform in NJ in assisting the elderly and their families combat this injustice. This situation probably occurs in nursing homes as well. Families put their trust in these facilities to take care of their loved one. These facilities have a duty of care taking the responsibility for the health and well being of the elderly patients. It seems the elderly/families are hung out to dry, without a way to fight for justice. The old rubber stamp line the standard of care was met is often given. The facilities set the standard of care, as an excuse. Governor Murphy instead of going all green in 2035, should concentrate on the here and now. Set up a system where families of these seniors could fight back, a legal aid for these situations. All of these politicians who get “campaign contributions” from these facilities need to get on board (Attorneys are unaffordable, most will not take elderly cases, not enough return). Once facilities are put on notice, the standard of care will all of a sudden become enhanced.
NJ is not for the senior population. Why was the Anchor property tax relief checks mailed out a week before the election? Think about it.
If you put your trust in anyone other than a loving family member then you should be doped up for doing such a shitty thing in the first place
As harsh and unfeeling comments you have made, your right nobody should trust hospitals, nursing homes(Care One), because their agenda is $$$ billing Medicare, providing less services.
What happens if you don’t have any family members to rely on? Think about that. Your trust goes to the hospital and nursing homes, trying to do your best for your loved on and they fail horribly.
They gave my Mom with mild dementia Morphine without my request or acknolegement. Care One .
Sorry to hear that. Which Care One?
Sorry about your situation. Which Care One? Was it Care One Valley? I know this happened there. Quetiapine /Seroquel is a psychological drug given to seniors to keep them in a lethargic state where the elderly are constantly sleeping. Less staff, less care less cost but bill Medicare. All this without consent from patients or family.
It’s horrible how senior are treated in hospitals and nursing homes. The older your are the services and treatment are worse. These seniors become expendable. Cost cutting yet they bill Medicare! I think the comment by anonymous is out of line to an extent, because without family, input, you think your doing your best for your loved family member, trusting these facilities yet they failed. The comments by Charles Smith is right on.
