Ridgewood NJ, New Jersey is famous for many things—diners, beaches, and unfortunately, the highest property tax rate in the country. According to the Tax Foundation’s 2026 State Tax Competitiveness Index, New Jersey remains firmly at the bottom of the list for tax favorability.

But the real question for residents isn’t just “How much do I pay?” it’s “What am I getting in return?” A new study by WalletHub on “Taxpayer ROI” (Return on Investment) has just been released, and the results are a mixed bag of gold stars and red flags.
The Verdict: NJ Ranks 35th in Taxpayer ROI
While New Jersey residents pay some of the highest taxes in the nation, the state only ranks 35th overall when it comes to the quality of services received per dollar spent.
According to WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo, there is often a tradeoff. While states like Florida or New Hampshire (which rank #1 and #2) charge little to no income tax, New Jersey argues that its high costs fund superior public systems.
Here is how New Jersey’s services graded out in the 2026 report:
-
Education: 6th (A major win for families).
-
Safety: 5th (One of the safest states in the U.S.).
-
Economy: 17th.
-
Health: 17th.
-
Infrastructure & Pollution: 45th (A significant drag on the state’s score).
The Best of NJ: A World-Class Education
If there is one area where New Jersey taxpayers truly “get what they pay for,” it is in the classroom. WalletHub ranked New Jersey’s public school system as the 3rd best in the entire nation. This high ranking in education and safety prevents the state from falling into the bottom ten of the ROI list.
The Worst of NJ: Pollution and Hospitals
Despite the high tax revenue, New Jersey’s physical and medical infrastructure is struggling. The state’s hospital system ranked a dismal 49th, and the “Infrastructure and Pollution” category (ranked 45th) remains a massive pain point for residents dealing with aging roads and environmental concerns.
How We Compare: The ROI Leaderboard
New Jersey is caught between “low-tax/high-value” states and “high-tax/low-value” neighbors.
| Rank | State (Best ROI) | Rank | State (Worst ROI) |
| 1 | New Hampshire | 46 | New York |
| 2 | Florida | 47 | North Dakota |
| 3 | South Dakota | 48 | Hawaii |
| 4 | Missouri | 49 | California |
| 5 | Ohio | 50 | New Mexico |
New Jersey currently sits at 35th, outperforming neighbors like New York but trailing significantly behind the national leaders.

New Jersey’s ranking would be closer to 50th if this”study” was done by a reputable firm, and not WalletHub, a known left wing biased organization that produces many scores based on unquantifiable metrics.
