“Due to the nationwide cell service outages today here’s a PSA! These fire call (Gamewell) boxes around town are always operational and if you have any kind of emergency just pull one of these boxes and you will get a full police and fire response!”

Although some Verizon and T-Mobile customers also reported network outages, they were less widespread. T-Mobile and Verizon stated that their networks were not affected by AT&T’s outage, and any reported issues might have been due to difficulties reaching AT&T customers.

For AT&T customers facing service disruptions, one option is to enable Wi-Fi calling if Wi-Fi access is available. This feature allows users to make calls and send texts over a Wi-Fi connection. More than 74,000 AT&T customers reported outages on the DownDetector website, although this number represents self-reported incidents and may not be comprehensive. Reports peaked around 9 am ET but started to decline by 11 am ET. AT&T customers can call 911 via wifi or by using SOS mode in the event of an emergency.

AT&T acknowledged the outage but did not specify the cause. The company advised affected customers to use Wi-Fi calling until service was fully restored. To enable Wi-Fi calling, users can access their phone’s Settings app, navigate to the Cellular or Connection settings, and activate the Wi-Fi calling feature. AT&T confirmed that there is no additional cost for this feature and that it works automatically when connected to a chosen Wi-Fi network.

By late morning, AT&T reported that three-quarters of its network had been restored, with network teams working urgently to restore service to remaining customers. However, the company did not provide a timeframe for when full restoration would occur. AT&T encouraged customers to reach out to customer service through direct messages for assistance with any ongoing issues.
