
Wallington Man Charged with Attempted Murder Following Violent Stabbing Incident

WALLINGTON, NJ – A quiet morning on Strong Street was shattered this weekend after a medical call transitioned into a major criminal investigation. Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 42-year-old Sean McAvinue on charges including first-degree attempted murder.
The incident, which left a 74-year-old victim hospitalized with critical injuries, prompted a swift response from local police and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit.
Details of the Incident on Strong Street
On Saturday, April 18, 2026, at approximately 10:51 a.m., Wallington Police officers were dispatched to a residence for a reported medical emergency involving an individual struggling to breathe.
Upon arrival, the situation turned out to be far more severe. Officers discovered:

A 74-year-old male suffering from eight stab wounds to his head, torso, and legs.

The victim was rushed to HMH Hackensack University Medical Center in critical condition.

The suspect, Sean McAvinue, was found outside the residence with a hand injury and blood on his clothing.
The Investigation
Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and the Wallington Police Department launched a joint investigation, supported by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators determined that McAvinue allegedly utilized multiple kitchen knives during the assault.
While the victim was initially in critical condition, hospital officials have since upgraded his status to stable.
