LYNDHURST, NJ – New details have emerged regarding a heavy police presence and subsequent death investigation that took place on Lake Avenue last Thursday. Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella released an update clarifying the events surrounding the death of 38-year-old Brendan R. Trivisonno.
The investigation, conducted in coordination with the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, followed a high-stakes attempt by law enforcement to serve an arrest warrant related to a homicide investigation in Union County.
The Incident: A Barricade and Standoff
On Thursday, April 16, 2026, at approximately 5:33 a.m., detectives from the Union County Prosecutor’s Office and the Lyndhurst Police Department arrived at Trivisonno’s residence. Their goal was to take him into custody on charges originating from a separate homicide case.
According to official reports:
-
Evasion & Barricade: Upon seeing law enforcement, Trivisonno fled and barricaded himself alone inside the home.
-
SWAT Response: The Bergen County Regional SWAT Team was deployed to the scene to manage the high-risk situation.
-
Negotiation Attempts: While officers attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender from outside, a gunshot was heard from within the residence.
Investigation Findings
After the SWAT team made entry into the home, they located Trivisonno suffering from a gunshot wound. HMH Hackensack University Medical Center Tactical Emergency Medical Services (TEMS), who were already staged on-site, immediately attempted life-saving measures. However, Trivisonno was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit led the death investigation. Forensic evidence and the initial inquiry have confirmed that Trivisonno died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Oversight and Cooperation
Because the death occurred during a law enforcement action, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General was notified immediately. After an initial review, the Attorney General’s Office designated the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office to lead the independent investigation into the circumstances of the death.
Prosecutor Musella expressed his gratitude to the numerous agencies that collaborated on the scene, including the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, the Lyndhurst Police Department, and the regional SWAT and medical teams.
