Former Ridgewood High School principal Jack Lorenz gives BOE candidate  Jim Morgan huge endorsement

(Ridgewood-NJ) In what can only be characterized by a lack of confidence in his former colloquies former Ridgewood High School principal Jack Lorenz has come out endorsing the anti-establishment BOE candidate Jim Morgan in the upcoming school board election.

Lorenz who was popular and well respected even by this blog which is frequently critical of the current school board . Lorenz left Ridgewood in what many consider unfortunate circumstances .His tenure at the Ridgewood high school  was marked by a revitalization in educational priorities but after much friction with the BOE he called it quits .

Lorenz gave the Morgan campaign a huge boost by lending the endorsement of an educational insider to a campaign that up till now has attracted primarily the dissatisfied and growing “NO” to the budget vote in town. Morgan is seen by many as an outsider who has locked horns with the BOE in the past and while his positions on turf fields and field lighting are well known he is still a stranger to many on other school related issues.

Morgans push for more transparency in BOE affairs has been embraced by critics but viewed with disdain by cottage place and its supporters.Yet with the ever increasing “NO ” to the budget vote in town and the BOE’s support continuing to weaken Ridgewood voters may be more inclined than ever to ad outsider on the school board.

Christie said in talks on bond issue for higher education

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is in talks with lawmakers on a plan to seek voter approval to sell as much as $3.5 billion of bonds for college improvements, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions.
The referendum would be put on the ballot as soon as this November and would fund work on dormitories, research labs and classrooms, said the people, who declined to be identified because they aren’t authorized to speak publicly about the talks. Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for Christie, declined to comment on the bond proposal in an e-mail.  (Dopp, Bloomberg)

“The MTR Fund – named for Mary Therese Rose Crilly – helps special needs children enjoy the same kind of joyful, active life that Mary enjoyed despite her limitations. Mary passed away just weeks before her fifth birthday from Joubert syndrome. Though Mary was profoundly disabled, her limitless love and courage inspired those closest to her to establish this fund in her name to pay for services (i.e.: therapies, orthotics, wheelchairs, walkers and similar type equipment) for children with disabilities whose parents cannot afford to provide the care their children desperately need.

The Mary Fund helps these special children reclaim some of the simple joys of childhood, denied
them by the disabilities that keep them from living life to its fullest.

As each child is able to enjoy the simple pleasures of childhood and life because of the fund, Mary’s beautiful smile spreads from face to face. It is these smiles that will forever keep Mary’s life a
celebration of love, joy, hope, simplicity and happiness.

Private-sector nonfarm employment grew by 209,000 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis in March, according to the national employment report released today by Roseland-based Automatic Data Processingwhich revised its February numbers upward to 230,000, from the initial report of 216,000.

The numbers were slightly above consensus expectations, but held no surprises, said Joel Prakken, chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers LLC, which co-authors the monthly report with ADP.  (Tarbous, NJBIZ)

>State, retailers spar over gift-card unspent-funds law

The state fired back today at American Express and other opponents of the gift card unspent funds law.
“The large card companies would have you believe that the state is ‘grabbing’ or ‘taxing’ gift cards. That is a total fabrication and nothing more than part of a misinformation campaign designed to protect giant card issuers’ anti-consumer business practices and unjustifiable profit-grabs from abandoned or forgotten gift cards,” the Treasury Department stated in a release it issued today.  (Mooney, State Street Wire)

NJT Rail ‘bill of rights’ proposed

NJ Transit’s lackluster rankings in its most recent customer survey have prompted a state senator to propose a train rider “bill of rights” for minimum service standards — from seats to heat and some recourse if the transit agency fails to deliver.

The bill, proposed by state Sen. Jennifer Beck, R-Monmouth, would be similar to what the Metro-North and Long Island railroads proposed as a passenger bill of rights for their riders earlier this year.  (Higgs, Gannett)

>Democrats boycott Coke, Walmart over voter ID laws

>Democrats boycott Coke, Walmart over voter ID laws

Democratic officials Wednesday launched a two-pronged attack on states with new laws requiring identification before voting, the highlight being a call to boycott Coke, Walmart and others that back a leading organization pushing for voter ID laws.

“We are organizing. We are not agonizing,” said Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., who is leading a parallel Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s effort to get government identification into the hands of the estimated 2-3 million Democrats who don’t have one. “We have staffed up,” he said.

Officials from another party-backed group, Color of Change, kicked off a boycott of Coke and other financial backers of the American Legislative Exchange Council which supports new voter ID laws. Other supporters include Walmart and Koch Industries. The boycott call started with a tweet (@CocaCola is helping undermine voting rights. Tell them to stop) and a webpage. The group also has tied the Council to the Trayvon Martin shooting case.

MTA’s Lhota says subway to N.J. won’t happen in ‘our lifetime’
A proposal to extend New York City’s No. 7 subway line under the Hudson River to New Jersey probably won’t happen in “our lifetime,” Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Joseph Lhota said.
Lhota, speaking at a meeting of the New York Building Congress in Manhattan today, said the No. 7 train extension would be too expensive, require building rail yards in New Jersey and would face pricing issues.  (Dopp, Bloomberg)

>Agenda: State Board of Education

Agenda: State Board of Education
What they are doing: While school reform and funding issues roil New Jersey’s political scene, the state Board of Education’s agenda is a relatively light one today. One policy area up for vote is a change in the competency testing required for incoming elementary school teachers.
Teacher testing: The board will take up final adoption of a resolution to adjust what incoming elementary teachers need to know to pass the national Praxis exam. The exam is already required for new teachers, testing them on their knowledge and skills. But New Jersey will be participating in a new version that sets more rigorous requirements for passing all four different subject area tests: language arts, math, science and social studies. The board will set the state’s required passing scores on the exam.  (Mooney, NJ Spotlight)

When NJ kids take out No. 2 pencils, they’ll be testing the test
When elementary and middle school students sit down next month for the annual state testing, they will get their first taste of new national academic standards coming to New Jersey –- even if they may not know it.
The Christie administration will begin to “field test” questions derived from the new Common Core State Standards into the next NJASK tests, given to every student Grades 3-8.  (Mooney, NJ Spotlight)
