Time to enter the current century Ridgewood. There will be free preschool in Manhattan while we still have 1/2 day Kindergarten and middle of the week school registration.
Most households now are 2 income families and our schools have to start to respect that fact.
If this were a private corporation and a critical facility was not able to function because some asshole manager forgot to periodically check the standby generator, that manager’s ass would be grass.
Developer drops plan for housing in Ridgewood

RIDGEWOOD — And then there were three.
For more than a year now, Ridgewood’s Planning Board has been mulling four applications from four separate developers for a quartet of proposed downtown housing complexes.
But village residents learned this week that one of the developers has backed out, completely withdrawing its application from consideration.
Terminal Construction — which had been eyeing the former Ken Smith Motors site for a multifamily, high-density housing development — notified Ridgewood in a letter dated Dec. 17 that it wanted to pull its petition.
Terminal’s proposed project, dubbed Ridgewood Station, would have been a 114-luxury apartment and retail complex on Franklin Avenue.
The application’s withdrawal should have no impact on the board’s ongoing consideration of a master plan amendment, which would potentially permit such developments in Ridgewood.

Christie and the IRS Contrast the Governor’s contrition with Obama’s lack thereof

Now that we have your attention, allow us to explain. Governor Chris Christie apologized to New Jersey on Thursday for aides who closed traffic lanes in order to punish a Democratic mayor, and he fired a deputy chief of staff. We mention the IRS because Mr. Christie’s contrition contrasts so sharply with President Obama’s handling of the tax agency’s abuse of political opponents and his reluctance to fire anyone other than a military general for anything.
In his long press conference in Trenton, Mr. Christie was properly contrite, saying he had been “lied to” by the senior aide he proceeded to fire. He also said he is withdrawing his support for his former campaign manager to run the state Republican Party because the man had shown “callous and indifferent” behavior toward the people inconvenienced by the traffic-lane closures. If Mr. Christie really didn’t know about this cheap exercise in political payback, and nothing new emerges, the incident shouldn’t interfere with the Governor’s expected presidential run.
That doesn’t mean Mr. Christie shouldn’t learn from the experience. One lesson is that he’s going to have to upgrade the quality of his advisers as he moves onto the national scene. The traffic-lane-as-vendetta ploy is so dumb and petty that anyone who would attempt it isn’t ready for prime time. Never mind putting it in email.

Under Obama, Youth Misery Index Hits All-Time High

A Youth Misery Index that measures young Americans’ woes has skyrocketed under President Barack Obama and hit an all-time high.
The index, released Wednesday, was calculated by adding youth unemployment and average college loan debt figures with each person’s share of the national debt. While it has steadily grown over the decades, under Obama the figure has shot up dramatically, from 83.5 in 2009 to 98.6 in 2013.
The index has increased by 18.1 percent since Obama took office, the highest increase under any president, making Obama the worst president for youth economic opportunity, according to the nonprofit that released the figure.
“Young people are suffering under this economy,” said Ashley Pratte, program officer for Young America’s Foundation, which developed the index and calculates it annually using federal statistics. “They’re still living in their parent’s basements, unable to find full-time jobs that pay them what they need in order to pay back their debt.”

Generator fails at Ridgewood water treatment plant during outage

Ridgewood escaped a worst-case scenario after the water treatment facility’s emergency generator failed during a New Year’s Eve power outage, but the village must now shoulder the cost to repair the non-functioning system parts.
Top public works and engineer officials have not determined a definitive cost for the repairs but they are hopeful that a $15,000 budget will cover the bill. The Village Council will consider a resolution approving that budget next Wednesday.
According to Chris Rutishauser, municipal engineer and head of the Ridgewood public works department, an electrician had been on the site soon after the outage occurred and at press time was still working.
“Part of the outage caused significant upset in our electrical systems, that’s why we need an electrician to go through everything to make sure it runs,” said Rutishauser. “The plant is still not at 100 percent.”
Report: Freed Guantanamo Detainee Involved in Benghazi Attack
U.S. officials told the Washington Post that Abu Sufian bin Qumu, a former Guantánamo Bay detainee and leader of a paramilitary group with al-Qaeda ties, had a role in the Benghazi embassy attacks on September 11, 2012.
Qumu, currently a leader of a wing of the Libyan paramilitary group Ansar al-Sharia, is being linked, along with his militiamen, to the attack on the Benghazi consulate. The Post notes that many eyewitnesses noted the group’s presence in Benghazi days before the attack–despite being natives to the city of Darnah–and Qumu’s presence specifically. Reuters reports that the group’s presence in Benghazi after being kicked out in the post-September 11, 2012 days was noted as recently as last February, with many anti-Gaddafi Libyans arguing that Ansar al-Sharia’s role in toppling the dictator grants them a certain license to roam freely despite their overt violence and Islamic fundamentalism. The State Department is set to designate Ansar al-Sharia a terrorist group in the coming days and link its activities to the broader, less structured, post-bin Laden al-Qaeda.
Obama Donor Barbara Bossermanto Head IRS Tea Party Targeting Investigation
The attorney heading the internal investigation into potential unfair targeting of conservative groups by the IRS is a frequent and significant donor to both the Democratic National Committee and President Obama, Rep. Darrell Issa revealed today, in what he calls a “startling conflict of interest” that jeopardizes the investigation.
Rep. Issa, Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, sent a letter today to Attorney General Eric Holder revealing new information that reached the committee on who is conducting the internal investigations at the IRS regarding the inappropriate targeting of conservative groups. Seeking an explanation as to why the FBI has been unresponsive to the committee, Rep. Issa noted that current and former IRS officials revealed Barbara Bosserman, a trial attorney within the IRS’s Civil Rights Commission, is leading the internal investigation.
Democrat Senator Udall Asked State to Cook Books on Obamacare Numbers
CompleteColorado.com reports that emails show U.S. Senator Mark Udall’s (D-CO) office pressured the Colorado Division of Insurance to downplay the number of insurance cancellations caused by the rollout of ObamaCare. A full 249,199 Colorado citizens were victimized by ObamaCare’s cancellations. According to the emails, Udall’s office hoped to change the definition of a “cancellation” as a way to lower the number. All of this occurred late last year as the storm around cancellations was engulfing Democrats and the president.
Examiner Study: Walmart Health Plans Better than Obamacare
Walmart is offering better and cheaper healthcare insurance coverage for its more than one million employees than plans competing under Obamacare, the Washington Examiner reports.
A comparison by the newspaper found that Walmart’s plans are more affordable and provide better access to doctors and hospitals than the plans offered under the Affordable Care Act.
The Examiner asked health policy experts and independent insurance agents affiliated with the National Association of Health Underwriters to study the plans to see which, if any, were better.
Walmart has two plans from Blue Cross Blue Shield — one called the Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) and another it calls HRA High, which cost employees more but have lower deductibles. Individuals can receive coverage for as little as $40 a month while a family plan costs about $160 a month.
The Walmart plans, which are offered to 1.1 million enrolled employees, differ from Obamacare in that age and gender do not affect premium rates and there are no income eligibility requirements.
A Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) analysis found that unsubsidized Obamacare enrollees will face monthly premiums five to nine times higher than Walmart premiums.

Youngsters also improve their general listening and social skills by being exposed to repertoires from composers including Ravel, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn.
In addition, they are likely to appreciate a wider range of music in later years, according to a study from the Institute of Education, (IoE), University of London.

Revised middle-school math exams alter profile of what students need to know in grades 6 to 8
The move to online testing in 2015 may have grabbed most of the attention, but the state’s NJASK exams will also be seeing some more changes this spring, as the current elementary and middle school tests are brought into line with the Common Core State Standards.
The state has already started the phase-in of the new national standards, revising NJASK’s grades 3-8 language arts and grades 3-5 math sections. But it left intact the grades 6-8 math exams while the younger students had the necessary instruction.
Now it’s the turn of the middle-school math tests. Some content areas will be moved entirely to different grades. Ratios and relationships, for example, will be addressed in grades 6 and 7; mathematical functions more heavily weighted in grade 8.
“The idea was that the scaffolding of content was special for math, so we staged that implementation,” said Bari Erlichson, assistant education commissioner in charge of the testing. (Mooney/NJSpotlight)
