Reader Says Failed Generator is Gross Incompetence

If this were a private corporation and a critical facility was not able to function because some asshole manager forgot to periodically check the standby generator, that manager’s ass would be grass.

But this is Ridgewood, and in Ridgewood taxpayers just keep kicking in more and more money each month to pay to correct stupid mistakes made by management and management keeps getting their annual bonuses.

The nerve of Mr. Rutishauser to blame NJDEP for his failure to make sure the generator was checked on a regular basis. And what a bunch of buffoons on the Village Council; they just keep approving additional funds to cover incompetent management decisions.
Is there a plan now Mr. Rutishauser or will you not try to start the generator again until the next time commercial power goes out? And by the way, what happened to the Emergency Services trailer mounted generator that was supposed to be stored at Water Pollution Control? Why didn’t someone step outside and try using that one?

  1. I agree with the above comment, except for the language. If i were his manager he would be fired.

  2. Seems to me one simple question should be answered first.
When was the last time the generator was checked????????

  3. Your right #2. Where is the log book and service book.

  4. #1, don’t fire the messenger. The strong language seems appropriate to me.

  5. Did I hear the Mayor say it was Gabbert’s fault.

  6. I totally agree – not knowing your generator is broken is completely preventable.

Do we not have a service contract on the generator? I work with several data centers, all with generators, and all with a company that services them on a monthly basis. Additionally, most, if not all commercial generators have monitoring hardware/software that continually check the basic functions and periodically do an automatic exercising and test of the engine.

I also don’t understand how a power failure can damage a facilty. Power coming back to quickly (a surge or spike) certainly can, but again, there are a multitude of ways to protect against that. I guess we don’t have those either. Amazing.

  7. My generator at home comes on once a week.
There is a panel with a simple green light indicating proper functioning, or red if not.
One would expect the same from the facility.

  8. Our engineer, Mr. Rutishauser, stated on Wednesday night, “it happens,” in reference to the failure of the generator. This was delivered with a shrug. Please, do not shrug this off as an unimportant, insignificant event. It is going to cost more than my annual pension to correct this mess. It is inexcusable that the generator was not tested on a regular basis.

  9. Our engineer, Mr. Rutishauser, is getting a bit to big for his britches. He is the authority on everything. No one is right but him. Time for him to go bye bye O.

  10. Our Village engineer should be fired! The problems we’ve had with the water department alone has cost the taxpayers of Ridgewood tens of thousands of dollars in fines. Then he rubber stamps projects like Valley Hospital and multi-family housing projects saying they will not put undue strain on our system. This guy clearly hates the residents of Ridgewood. He’s probably one of those anonymous posters that calls us all “spoiled brats”.

To “mom with a pov’… you should change your handle to ‘mom with a buha (hint= bug up her _ _ _”‘. This man is a dedicated employee and for you to expect him to micromanage every department shows you have never stepped out of the kitchen. You owe him an apology.

  12. and yet the talk on the street is that this bum was asked to take a higher post in town.when some one steps down. no way jose.
    start shining my shoes.

  13. Would be very good for council to use this experience as cause for dismissal. The shrugging and arrogance of certain Village employees, including the engineer, who doesn’t even live here and clearly does not care about us, have been rampant and inexcusable for a very long time. OUT.

  14. And yet he told people he was the smartest man in three states.
and he was the boss of the one and only coin boy. another ex worker from engineer dept. a k a big head that stole big money from the coin room. and mr shit head rutishauser ran away from that one. what is up with this guy. he needs to go to charm school.

Since you apparently have an ‘axe to grind’, you seriously think not living here is now an issue? Lets list all of the police, fire, sanitation, streets, teachers etc who live here.. it will be a small list.

You forgot to enlighten the readers that the dpw is down from 27 workers.
It’s quite obvious you don’t like your boss.
At least have the balls to admit you’re a disgruntled employee.

  17. Why does the Village fund Ridgewood Water’s budget ? Shouldn’t it be able to pay for itself with revenues from our water utility bills ? They’ve asked for $2.12 million from the Village, which includes $1 million for water meters.

  18. to #16 I never worked for the town. thank god.

  19. Yes we need 27 DPW works to watch the generator . One to push the start button and 26 to go on a coffee break

  20. #11, a bug up my a__? Get out of the kitchen? What kind of neanderthal are you? A woman can’t have a valid gripe without being called names and being put down?

Now, back to the point. Did you say micromanage?? Are you kidding? He’s the VILLAGE ENGINEER! If he’s not ultimately in charge of a village generator, who is? The Superintendent of the Street Department is not in charge of fixing potholes, but he is the manager of those that should.

#15, I do not believe that teachers, sanitation workers, police or fire get to have a say on
matters that have a long-lasting impact on our village like the following items listed as part of his job responsibilities:
    (2)
Provide staff assistance to the Village Planning Board for the review of subdivision applications and plats, master planning studies and capital budget preparation and analysis.
Make such inspections of the work of public contractors as may be necessary or desirable, supervise the performance of public works contracts and certify the amounts due and payable thereunder.

If you are making decisions about the future of our village, I believe you should live in town. And if you don’t, well, you are going to be scrutinized and questioned on the decisions you make that are unpopular in the community.

  21. Good for you MOM.

  22. to # 19 why don’t you try to work down at the plant for a day. smart ass. who are you. and what do you do for work, hummmmmm jerk off.

  23. just fix it. and tell the d e p to kiss your ass.

  24. Guess you hit a nerve #19.

  25. If the DPW and the workers at the sewer plant jobs were out sourced . The village would not have to pave $15000. to fix it.

  26. yea yea yea that’s right shut it all down big guy. and to # 19 I don’t have nerve,s I work in the city.

  27. hey have the paid fire dept take care of it.I wish I had a paid fire dept in my big own next door. how do we do it. more people, more buildings, huh, hum, yea, well.

  28. It would be nice if you could read all the comments it stops at #18

Any updates on this James ? Was this employee let go ? Wasn’t he in charge of Rica, too ? And the DEP fine ? How much has this guy cost taxpayers ?
