Be Cautious for Deer on Roads – DOT Encourages Reporting of Troubled Spots

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is urging motorists to be alert for white-tailed deer on roads across the state with the arrival of the fall breeding season, especially during morning and evening commutes when visibility may be poor and deer are more active.

Drivers should be extra alert to avoid collisions that could result in injuries and damage to their vehicles, as deer movements related to breeding have begun and will pick up in the coming weeks. Motorists are encouraged to alert the Department of Transportation of dead deer they find along the state highway system and deer crossing locations. DOT has made it easy and convenient for residents to do so online at https://www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/potholeform.shtm .

Triggered by shorter days and cooler weather, deer disperse and move around considerably as they search for mates. Studies indicate the peak mating season for deer in New Jersey runs from late October, throughout November, and into mid-December in all regions of the state, beginning earliest in northern regions.

The danger is particularly pronounced at dawn and dusk when many people are commuting to and from work. Visibility resulting from low light or sun glare may be difficult during these times. Commuters should be especially alert and drive with additional caution when daylight saving time ends on Nov. 3. Normal driver commuting times will more closely align with peak deer activity periods after this time.

The following tips are offered to help motorists stay safe:

If you spot a deer, slow down and pay attention to possible sudden movement. If the deer doesn’t move, don’t go around it. Wait for the deer to pass and the road is clear.

Pay attention to “Deer Crossing” signs. Slow down when traveling through areas known to have a high concentration of deer so you will have ample time to stop if necessary.

If you are traveling after dark, use high beams when there is no oncoming traffic. High beams will be reflected by the eyes of deer on or near roads.

If you see one deer, be on guard: others may be in the area. Deer typically move in family groups at this time of year and cross roads single-file. Female deer are being chased by bucks and during breeding phase are often unaware of traffic.

Don’t tailgate. Remember: the driver in front of you might have to stop suddenly to avoid hitting a deer.

Always wear a seatbelt, as required by law. Drive at a safe and sensible speed, taking into account weather, available lighting, traffic,

curves and other road conditions.

If a collision appears inevitable, do not swerve to avoid impact. The deer may counter-maneuver suddenly. Brake appropriately, but stay in your lane. Collisions are more likely to become fatal when a driver swerves to avoid a deer and instead collides with oncoming traffic or a fixed structure along the road.

Report any deer-vehicle collision to a local law enforcement agency immediately.

Ridgewood Native Monica Bascio Named Paralympic SportsWoman of the Year

After two second place performances at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Monica Bascio went undefeated in 2013.

Ridgewood Native Monica Bascio  Named Paralympic SportsWoman of the Year
By Doug Williams | Oct. 24, 2013, 12:30 p.m. (ET)

After earning a pair of silver medals at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Monica Bascio wasn’t quite sure how her 2013 would unfold.

Bascio had goals, of course, and they were lofty.

The 44-year-old handcycling standout — who earned silvers in the individual time trial and road race in London — wanted to be the best on the world cup circuit and in the world championships this year.

But an extended winter in Colorado, where she lives, cut back on some training and early-season races, and she wasn’t quite sure where she stood.

“And you don’t want to be unsure,” said Bascio, a three-time Paralympian in cycling (2012) and Nordic skiing (2006, 2010). “If anything, my experience has taught me that confidence can get you lots of places, and I like to feel that. I know what that feels like, so I’d say I wasn’t sure in May. But after going into the world cups, it certainly proved that I was ready to handle it, (I was) on top and in great shape, actually the [best] shape of my life.”

Bascio won two gold medals at her first world cup event of the year in Spain in June, in the time trial and road race in her H3 category, then equaled that performance at her next world cup in Italy, giving her a huge dose of confidence heading into the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships.

Renewable energy program gains steam in Ridgewood

The Ridgewood News

So ground-breaking is the renewable energy plant at Ridgewood’s water treatment facility that the success of the environmental endeavor is creating a global buzz.

Municipal officials and other dignitaries recently commemorated the project’s completion and ongoing energy production with a celebration that included a tour of the inner workings at the state-of-the-art operation center.

In the limelight are the village’s biogas system and its generator, which optimizes the water treatment process and converts gas produced by waste into useable electricity. That electricity is then utilized to power the entire complex, which is the village’s greatest energy consumer. The particular practice was described by officials as an innovative process, one that is only beginning to gain steam in the country, let alone in the world.

The new biogas-fueled power generator is one of the crown jewels of Ridgewood Green, a public-private partnership that formed in December 2011 and merged the ideas of village officials with the capital and resources of Natural Systems Utilities (NSU), Middlesex Water Company (MWC) and American Refining and Biochemical. Ridgewood Green also installed solar energy panels at the facility, as well as at Village Hall, Ridgewood Fire Department headquarters and the EMS building.

Reader: Valley expert will be invited back to answer to his contradictions an “undue BURDEN” on Valley. What????

Valleywood_theridgewoodblog.net_

Reader:  Valley expert will be invited back to answer to his contradictions an “undue BURDEN” on Valley. What????

When Valley’s experts testified last Spring, no one informed the public that the sessions were “quasi judicial”, and no one was given written information, power points or brochures ahead of time. How could any of us have “objected” or “cross-examined” these experts? And, of course, we could not afford to have legal representation during all of those meetings; we are living beyond our means as it is.

Now when there is the possibility that a Valley expert will be invited back to answer to his contradictions, we are told that this would cause an “undue BURDEN” on Valley. What???? What about the burden on us?

Often by going door to door, we have scraped up the $ to hire a lawyer and and expert for their precious time—time that is wasted by Drill. Many of us have children in college, and face a lousy return on the houses in which we invested–because of Valley. Many of us are caring for aging, ailing parents. We have left our children to the face their homework woes alone countless times to attend PB meetings (these started when my daughter was 8. She is now learning to drive, but still doesn’t understand when I can’t be there for her).

What about the burden on us? What about the burden we will be asked to bear if this ludicrous expansion happens????

Readers Once again raise Questions on Village Council member Gwenn Hauck’s Objectivity

Gwenn Hauck Hospital Auxiliary

Readers Once again raise Questions on Village Council member Gwenn Hauck’s Objectivity

I think she cannot be objective. She spoke in front of the previous council at the prior h-zone hearings asking that council to vote yes for the expansion. She said the people at the hospital are her friends and she trusts them.

Village Council member Gwenn Hauck is a past vice president not of the hospital itself but of the Hospital Auxiliary.

The public record states that Ms. Hauck received a campaign donation of over $800 from the hospital’s PR director, Ridgewood resident Megan Fraser, and her husband, on village council election day in May 2012.

Since Ms. Fraser had been appointed VP for Communications and Marketing at Valley three years earlier, in May 2009, according to the Valley website…

https://www.nypsystem.org/press/2009/05/ridgewood-resident-megan-frase.html

…Ms. Hauck accepted a significant (for a council election) donation from an officer of the hospital.

And yes, she organized major fundraisers during her time on the Auxiliary.

She says she can be objective about Valley’s proposal if the Planning Board votes yes, tossing the decision to the Council.

What do you think?

National Republican Senatorial Committee Renege on Lonegan Campaign Funding Promises

National Republican Senatorial Committee Renege on Lonegan Campaign Funding Promises
October 28,2013
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, It’s been a couple of weeks since the campaign has ended and for Steve Lonegan the bills keep coming in, but all the help promised  from conservatives and Republicans across the country hasn’t.

Lonegan not only ran four points ahead of Mitt Romney’s showing in this state (Romney would have won if he had run four points better!), but he carried nine counties and all six congressional districts with Republicans.

Clearly is  was a victory for our ideas, and a message that Republicans can take back our country if we stand up for what we believe.

While the Republicans in Washington DC sat on their hand and did nothing Steve Lonegan fought the good fight . The Republican National Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee did nothing to make this race competitive.

Their absence and sellout cowardice sent a message to others to stay away. Groups like the Senate Conservatives Fund would not  even acknowledge Steve’s  candidacy, even while spending hundreds of thousands of dollars attacking Republican Senators who aren’t even running until 2016 or 2018.

Steve  Lonegan put his own money where his mouth is spending  $100,000 of his own money . Unlike Corey Booker  Lorraine and Steve are not wealthy people, but believe in the free market and individual liberty and see how this is threatened by the policies of Barack Obama and Cory Booker.

According to Steve the National Republican Senatorial Committee, whose job it is is to elect Republicans, actually sent out an email  that asked people to send money to help MY campaign. But they kept every penny. And now I’m left holding the bag. (See below)

Losing this election was painful for Lorraine and myself. I want to be able to keep fighting for what you and I believe in, but I just can’t do it until I can pay these bills.

If you would like to help out please do what you can today by going to my website and making an immediate debt-retirement gift today.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Fund raising letter for Steve Lonegan

—– Forwarded Message —–
From: Brook Hougesen, Press Secretary – National Republican Senatorial Committee

Subject: Strippers. Corruption. And Abandoned Homes.

Friend,

The Senate race in New Jersey is tightening. The race has shifted 7 points in our favor, over just the past few days. Newark Mayor Cory Booker is in the lead, but that lead is dropping — indicating momentum is shifting as we get closer to Election Day.

As they learn more about his character, voters are realizing that Cory Booker isn’t fit to serve. First, the news broke that Booker got paid $689,000 from a law firm to which he then steered $2 million in city contracts. Then, he issued a new vacant property ordinance, which he continued to violate on his own property. Now, we’re learning that Booker is named in a lawsuit for allegedly failing to properly investigate fraud within his Administration as Mayor. Unfortunately, that’s only the beginning.

Booker has been caught lying about a fictional friend named T-Bone and inflating stories about his past. Then, it was revealed that he was tweeting with strippers. The last thing we need in the Senate is another Anthony Weiner.

We can win in New Jersey and in 2014 Senate races across the country, but only if supporters like you step up today. Your support will ensure we have resources to get our message out and support Steve Lonegan and conservative Senate candidates in their fight.

Please contribute $100, $50, $25, or whatever you can afford today to help us win in New Jersey and take back the majority in 2014.

Sincerely,

Brook Hougesen

NRSC Press Secretary

Nearly 1.5 Million Lose Health Insurance Due to ObamaCare

Nearly 1.5 Million Lose Health Insurance Due to ObamaCare

By merely adding up recent media reports, the National Center for Public Policy Research discovered that 1.5 million insurance cancellations have already gone out. These cancellations are all due to the ObamaCare mandate that requires every health insurance policy meet a minimum requirement of a one-size-fits-all Cadillac plan that forces people to pay for coverage they neither want nor need.

During his sales job to pass his signature health insurance plan, President Obama repeatedly and without qualification promised the American people that if you liked your insurance plan, you could keep it. Obama also promised everyone that their premiums would decrease and that he would never raise taxes on the middle class.

Jersey Shore Dunes Top Christie’s To-Do List After Sandy

Governor Chris Christie, saying Hurricane Sandy has framed his political future, said New Jersey won’t be ready to withstand another such beating until after storm-surge barriers are built along its Atlantic coastline.

Marking Sandy’s anniversary, Christie said in an interview that the Oct. 29 storm has defined his first term and shaped his bid for re-election. Christie also said he hopes to see the Jersey Shore, the largest piece of a $40 billion-a-year tourism industry, return to pre-storm levels by next summer. (Dopp/Bloomberg)

Obama admin. knew millions could not keep their health insurance

Obama admin. knew millions could not keep their health insurance
By Lisa Myers and Hannah Rappleye

President Obama repeatedly assured Americans that after the Affordable Care Act became law, people who liked their health insurance would be able to keep it. But millions of Americans are getting or are about to get cancellation letters for their health insurance under Obamacare, say experts, and the Obama administration has known that for at least three years.

Four sources deeply involved in the Affordable Care Act tell NBC NEWS that 50 to 75 percent of the 14 million consumers who buy their insurance individually can expect to receive a “cancellation” letter or the equivalent over the next year because their existing policies don’t meet the standards mandated by the new health care law. One expert predicts that number could reach as high as 80 percent. And all say that many of those forced to buy pricier new policies will experience “sticker shock.”

The Bergen County Republican Organization is Back!

The Bergen County Republican Organization is Back!
October 28,2013
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ , After years of floundering the Bergen County Republican Organization
under Chairman Robert B. Yudin is making a big come back .

According to the Bergen Record ; “Bergen County Republicans are raising campaign funds at a much more competitive pace than they have in several years, according to state election reports released Monday. After two election cycles in which Democrats out-raised Republicans — often by a better than 2-to-1 ratio — the two parties are not as far apart this year with Democrats raising $182,333 in the third quarter of 2013 compared to $157,224 raised by Republicans. And when funds raised by individual candidates is factored in, the combined totals show the two parties within about $6,000 of each other with the Democrats holding a slight edge.” https://www.northjersey.com/news/Bergen_County_GOP_closing_the_campaign_funding_gap_with_Democrats.html#sthash.C7AtXfI9.dpuf

This blog has for years criticized the BCRO and it practices  but we are forced to admit that there is a new “Can do” attitude for Bergen County Republicans . Be it the popularity of Governor Chris Christie , the leadership of  Bob Yudin , better candidates or the fact that so many Democrat operatives have landed a foul of the law all giving a unique importunity for a rejuvenated BCRO .

Despite his loss Conservative Steve Lonegan ran four points ahead of Mitt Romney’s showing in this state , and carried nine counties and all six congressional districts with Republicans.

Couple that with the unpopularity and failure of Obamacare and the fact that North Jersey has been disproportionately hurt by the Presidents economic policies and you have a recipe to further electoral gains .

Schoolwork can delay concussion victims’ recovery, study says

The Record

A concussion shouldn’t just keep children and teenagers out of sports while they recover — it may also require a break from the classroom, according to a new report by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The report, released Sunday, stressed the importance of avoiding intellectual stimulation while concussion symptoms are at their worst. The report noted that there is increasing evidence that using a concussed brain to learn “may worsen concussion symptoms and perhaps even prolong recovery.”

Doctors, researchers and educators have long noticed that students with concussions can find it challenging to learn, read or remember previously learned material. But the report went further, stating: “The school environment may also increase symptoms with exposure to bright lights and screens or noisy cafeterias and hallways.”

Dr. Howard Mazin, a pediatrician at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, said he agreed with the report’s recommendations. “Everyone needs to understand that the student should not only avoid the activity that caused the concussion but all activities that utilize the brain need to be reintroduced slowly,” he said.

Monmouth U. Sandy Tracking Poll: Displaced Residents Dissatisfied

Monmouth U. Sandy Tracking Poll: Displaced Residents Dissatisfied

The Monmouth University Polling Institute today released the results from a tracking panel of New Jersey residents displaced by Superstorm Sandy for at least one month.  Few of these families feel like they are close to full recovery and most feel that the state’s rebuilding efforts have overlooked them, the poll reports.

Few of those who were hit hardest by Sandy feel they have returned to their pre-storm living conditions.  Only 10% of those surveyed say they have fully recovered – including just 18% who are back in their homes and 3% who remain displaced from their pre-Sandy home.  [Note: some of those who are still “displaced” have decided to permanently relocate.]  By contrast, a statewide poll conducted by Monmouth University in September found that the vast majority of all New Jersey residents (76%) said their families have fully recovered from the storm. Christie blames feds for aid delays

Gov. Chris Christie says he understands victims’ frustrations a year after Superstorm Sandy but maintains that his administration isn’t to blame for delays in aid reaching victims.

In an interview with The Associated Press as the anniversary of the Oct. 29 megastorm approached, the New Jersey Republican blamed Congress, which took three months to approve a $50.7 billion relief package for the region, and a thicket of red tape put in place to prevent the type of fraud that occurred after Hurricane Katrina.

“We’ve done everything we possibly can, and I think in the immediate aftermath did a very good job,” Christie told the AP. “Since then, we’ve kind of been hostage to two situations, the delay in the aid itself and then what I call the `Katrina factor,’ which is the much more detailed and difficult rules surrounding the distribution of the aid.” (Politico)
