The two men vying to be Bergen County sheriff tangled in their final debate Sunday over who could do a better job of cutting the department’s budget.

Incumbent Republican Michael Saudino touted his fiscal record, which he said included cutting more than $5 million from his budget over the last three years while winning praise from the state comptroller’s office on holding down overtime costs.

“We’re being asked to be the role models for the rest of the counties in the state,” Saudino said.

But Democratic challenger James Mordaga continued to press on overtime costs racked up this year plus the pension benefits that Saudino and his four undersheriffs are collecting in addition to their salaries.

“I believe the Sheriff’s Department is going in the wrong direction,” said Mordaga, a former Hackensack police office and the brother of Hackensack Police Director Michael Mordaga.

Final Bergen County freeholder debate takes feisty turn

The Record

The final debate between the six candidates running for Bergen County freeholder turned feisty Sunday when the three Republican incumbents went on the attack more frequently than they had in three earlier forums.

But one Democratic challenger took his GOP opponents to task for mailing a flier that cited a state tax lien he incurred during a difficult time when his wife was dying.

During the 90-minute debate at Temple Emeth in Teaneck, Republican Freeholder John Mitchell criticized Democrats James Tedesco, Christopher Tully and Lorraine Waldes for tax increases adopted while they served on various borough councils and school boards.

Mitchell said taxes went up all but one year in Paramus when Tedesco was mayor, three out of four years while Tully was on the Bergenfield council and 11 years in a row while Waldes was on the River Vale School board.

The attack was a departure from earlier debates in which Mitchell and fellow Republicans John Felice and Maura DeNicola mostly touted their own record and ignored or deflected most of their charges leveled by the Democrats.

Reader says Valley’s leadership has alienated the residents

Valley’s leadership has alienated the residents of Pascack Valley with their effort to keep the Westwood facility closed and have deceived the PB and Village residents with their half-truths, lies, supposed compromise and now they are trying to shutdown comments on their plan with legal BS. Valley’s ‘experts’ speak out of both sides of their mouth and then Valley does not want these inconsistency acknowledged nor has it explained the inconsistencies to the community that it claims to serve. If Valley’s Board weren’t so morally bankrupt, they would throw out Valley’s leadership and bring in a team to rebuild the relationship with the community and find a true compromise.

Reader says the final decision resides with the Village Council the focus should shift to the Council Members.

One of the first things you learn in business is; “who is the decision maker?” That is the person you need to get to. If I remember correctly no matter what the Planning Board decides the final decision resides with the Village Council. If that is correct then the focus should shift to the Council Members.

Forget dealing with the hired gun Valley has sitting at the table objecting to what kind of coffee is going to be served. Start attending Village Council meetings and in the time allocated for open comments bring the arguments directly to the Council. No one from Valley is going to object, interrupt, or even show up. Let the puppets on the Planning Board continue their charade of “trying to follow the rules.” Focus on the Council Members who are going to have the final say. If I’m not mistaken we have another election in the not too distant future. I would assume the Valley debacle and the Urban Jungle that will be Ridgewood will be items #1 and #1A for anyone running for office or re-election.

Reader says Valley has bought influence at every level of government in town

Reader says Valley has bought influence at every level of government in town.

Don’t be naive people. The only remaining explanation to the surreal proceedings on the Valley expansion is money. Valley has bought influence at every level of government in town. They also have deep enough pockets to be a threat to the town legally if they don’t get their way.

And where there aren’t direct cash transactions, there are conflicts of interest everywhere. Councilwoman Hauck was a Valley Vice President and ran their black tie fundraisers for several years. PB Member Mr Grant works for Turner Construction and only makes a living when projects like this get approved. Councilman Pucciarelli has done work for Valley as well, and while he has temporarily recused himself, he’s making noise about rescinding his recusal .

Reader asks did administrators and teachers “walk to school” for the month of October ?

Ridgewood NJ, Since October was named “Walk to school month” many readers have inquired if teachers and administrators have practiced what they preached ?

Did Superintendent Dan Fishbien or members of the BOE walk to the Ed Center ? Did they join the Ridgewood School community in celebrating Walk-tober Fest! Taking some time this month to promote health, safety and the environment by walking to school – or just simply taking a walk. Keeping motorists away from school campuses will create a safer environment for students who choose to walk or ride their bikes to school.

Did they foloow there own advice as advertised that “walking to school promotes safety, health, concern for the environment and physical activity.”

Few people know how to take a walk. The qualifications are endurance, plain clothes, old shoes, an eye for nature, good humor, vast curiosity, good speech, good silence and nothing too much.

A black box in your car? Some see a source of tax revenue

The devices would track every mile you drive —possibly including your location — and the government would use the data to draw up a tax bill.

By Evan Halper

October 26, 2013, 7:11 p.m.

WASHINGTON — As America’s road planners struggle to find the cash to mend a crumbling highway system, many are beginning to see a solution in a little black box that fits neatly by the dashboard of your car.

The devices, which track every mile a motorist drives and transmit that information to bureaucrats, are at the center of a controversial attempt in Washington and state planning offices to overhaul the outdated system for funding America’s major roads.

The usually dull arena of highway planning has suddenly spawned intense debate and colorful alliances. Libertarians have joined environmental groups in lobbying to allow government to use the little boxes to keep track of the miles you drive, and possibly where you drive them — then use the information to draw up a tax bill.

World’s anger at Obama policies goes beyond Europe and the NSA
Published: October 25, 2013

By Hannah Allam and Jonathan S. Landay — McClatchy Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — Whether miffed over spying revelations or feeling sold out by U.S. moves in the Middle East, some of the United States’ closest allies are so upset that the Obama administration has gone into damage-control mode to ensure the rifts don’t widen and threaten critical partnerships.

The quarrels differ in their causes and degrees of seriousness. As a whole, however, they pose a new foreign policy headache for an administration whose overseas track record is seen in many quarters at home and abroad as reactive and lacking direction.

In Europe and the Middle East, rifts that once would’ve been quietly smoothed over have exploded into headlines and public remonstrations.

ObamaCare gives vulnerable incumbent Democrats the jitters

ObamaCare gives vulnerable incumbent Democrats the jitters
By Alexander Bolton – 10/26/13 12:00 PM ET

The Affordable Care Act is casting a shadow over Democrats’ chances in Senate battleground states, putting pressure on vulnerable Senate Democrats to distance themselves from the law’s clumsy rollout.

Five vulnerable Democratic incumbents who this week called for extending the law’s enrollment period and delaying penalties for not signing up on time come from states where voters hold unfavorable views of the law.

Some Democratic strategists, however, argue the issue is not as potent as Republicans think and predict it could boomerang on conservatives who have pushed for a full repeal of the law without offering detailed proposals to replace it.
