Valley should take ‘expansion plans off the table’

To the Editor:

For too many meetings and too many years Valley Hospital has tried to make a case to expand the hospital located at Van Dien and Linwood avenues in the middle of a lovely eastside neighborhood. Valley’s expansion needs will never end; I suggested more satellite locations in a previous letter the first time around, which I am now happy to read in your papers are being acquired for expansion needs.

Our village of 25,000 people does not need a city hospital on the 15 acres. Residents were told when they purchased their homes that Valley would never be allowed by our master plan to expand.

States seek to nullify Obama efforts
By TAL KOPAN | 7/27/13 3:14 PM EDT

Infuriated by what they see as the long arm of Washington reaching into their business, states are increasingly telling the feds: Keep out!

Bills that would negate a variety of federal laws have popped up this year in the vast majority of states – with the amount of anti-federal legislation sharply on the rise during the Obama administration, according to experts.

The “nullification” trend in recent years has largely focused on three areas: gun control; health care; and national standards for driver’s licenses. It’s touched off fierce fights within the states, and between the states and the feds, as well as raising questions and court battles about whether any of it is lega

Garrett Introduces PATH Act to Create Sustainable Housing Finance System

Garrett Introduces PATH Act to Create Sustainable Housing Finance System
Jul 23, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), Chairman of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government-Sponsored Enterprises, issued the following statement today after introducing the Protecting American Taxpayers and Homeowners Act (PATH Act), H.R. 2767, a bill that would create a sustainable housing finance system.

“Approximately five years ago our nation was hit with an unprecedented financial crisis.  Today, I am pleased to be introducing legislation that continues the process of addressing the core cause of it—the government’s misguided efforts at allocating mortgage credit through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

“The federal government’s domination of the housing finance market has left taxpayers on the hook for $5.1 trillion in mortgage guarantees.  The PATH Act finally takes control away from Washington bureaucrats and allows the American people the freedom to have more choices in determining which mortgage best suits their needs.

“I want to thank Chairman Hensarling and my colleagues on the House Financial Services Committee for their continued leadership and assistance in reaching out to Members of Congress and industry stakeholders to help incorporate many of the ideas and suggestions that others had to offer.

“The PATH Act will finally end the largest bailout in history and will put our country back on a path to a sustainable housing finance market that benefits both taxpayers and homebuyers.  I urge its swift passage by Congress and look forward to it being signed by the President.”

Hollywood Faces the ‘summer of doom’

Hollywood Faces the ‘summer of doom’

Industry insiders fear for future of big budget spectaculars, with US box office down 19% on same period last year

Xan Brooks
The Guardian, Friday 26 July 2013 14.48 EDT

At last week’s Comic-Con event in San Diego, the film director Zack Snyder bounded on stage to announce a bold new merger. His next Warner Bros blockbuster would pit Batman against Superman, two costumed superheroes in one movie. “Let’s face it,” said Snyder, “this is beyond mythological.” The fanbase was galvanised. Hyperbole hit the roof. But in Hollywood, alarm bells were ringing.

Industry insiders are referring to this season as “the summer of doom” – an overcrowded huddle of big-budget spectaculars, without the audience to sustain them. US box office takings are down 19% on the same period last year, while the studios are smarting from such high-profile casualties as The Lone Ranger, After Earth and the supernatural action-thriller RIPD. While the runaway success of Iron Man 3 and Despicable Me 2 helped soften the blow, major figures claim that the industry needs to adapt quickly or die.

When you view my website, please notice my “Photo Journal” which presents an overview of how I document an entire wedding day, including locations, and wedding vendors. I know from experience how important this is for brides to see.

Here I have tried to list almost every vendor I have worked with over the past 12 years. And then of course, there is my “Portfolio” which consist of images I selected over the years from Celebrities (such as Lady Gaga in 2008 for DJ Times Magazine), Bridal Couture, Engagements, and of course Weddings, to acquaint you with my style and experience.

The Lake at the North Pole, How Bad Is It?

The Lake at the North Pole, How Bad Is It?
Published: July 26th, 2013 , Last Updated: July 26th, 2013

The pictures are dramatic — a camera at the North Pole Environmental Observatory, sitting in the middle of what appears to be either a lake or open ocean, at the height of the summer sea ice melt season. Set against the backdrop of the precipitous decline in sea ice cover in recent decades due in large part to global warming, this would seem to be yet another alarming sign of Arctic climate change

These images have attracted media attention, such as this AtlanticWire post and this Daily Mail story, both of which portray the images as potential signs of an intensifying Arctic meltdown.

But before concluding that Arctic climate change has entered an even more ominous phase, it’s important to examine the context behind these images.

First, the cameras in question, which are attached to instruments that scientists have deposited on the sea ice at the start of each spring since 2002, may have “North Pole” in their name, but they are no longer located at the North Pole. In fact, as this map below shows, they have drifted well south of the North Pole, since they sit atop sea ice floes that move along with ocean currents. Currently, the waterlogged camera is near the prime meridian, at 85 degrees north latitude.

Readers continue to voice issue with Free News Paper Delivery

Maybe the USPS could take advice from the jerks that hurl unwanted, junk newspapers into our yard.

Despite letters and phone calls, like clockwork, they litter our property every week. We are even getting papers in KOREAN now! Does anyone know how to get these papers stopped once and for all?

If you are on vacation and your house gets broken into (while these junk papers are hurled onto your property) then sue the shit out of the company that delivered them.

When I go away, I stop the mail and the subscription papers.Having that crap in your driveway alerts burglars that nobody is home. Its disgraceful that the Village does not go after these companies for littering.

We came home after only two days away and those disgusting, free newspapers were piled up on our lawn. It IS a dead giveaway that we’re away.

I thought littering was a crime. This trashing and invasion of our privacy, property and home has to stop! But how? There are no addresses to write to, email addresses or phone numbers to call and sometimes the papers are not even in English!

NJ shore sees drop in beach revenue after Sandy
Saturday July 27, 2013, 12:47 PM
BY REMA RAHMAN
Associated Press

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey may be “Stronger than the Storm,” as the state’s promotional jingle goes, but towns up and down the stretch of shore that took the biggest whack from Superstorm Sandy nine months ago are seeing declines in beach revenue despite racing to rebuild, the best they could, in time for tourist season.

The drop in the number of beachgoers is being blamed on a number of Sandy-related factors — early decision-making by some regulars to book trips elsewhere during this season of rebuilding, fewer available rental units, delayed beach openings and changes in the school calendar to make up for storm days.

But some resort towns say it was an old boogeyman that did them in: rain.

Heidi’s Finest Bakery & Coffee Lounge Fresh and delicious, worth every penny!

Heidi’s Finest Bakery & Coffee Lounge Fresh and delicious, worth every penny!

Extraordinary Baked Goods  Excellent Service  Delicious Soups And Sandwiches Amazing Coffee  Many Of The Pastry’s Are Under 300 Calories!

Mick L. , Bergen County, NJ

The concept here is old world baking knowledge combined with modern health conscious principals. Agron, the proprietor of Heidi’s Finest Bakery, is a German immigrant who’s passion for traditional baking techniques combine a nice touch of rustic whole grain breads and wonderful light fresh pastry’s to meet today’s demand for a health conscious treat.

The bakery is just gorgeous with it’s slick modern feel, great seating and calming ambiance. No blaring lights or loud music just a nicely lit seating area in front by the windows or a cozy back area with low tables to sit and enjoy a fine cup of coffee and fresh baked item of your choice. The selection changes as only fresh fruits are used, the breads and rolls are dense and flavorful topped with a variety of seeds. They tend to run out of things as the more popular items are quickly gobbled up by early shoppers, so be flexible and try something new.

Soups and sandwiches are both a great choice here with chicken noodle and lentil available daily. The sandwiches are carefully crafted, with thought put into the selection of bread to best compliment the protein, a slathering of delicious remoulade imparts a nice element of savory herbs and citrus. As for the soups, the lentil is just delicious with the right consistency and herbaceousness, very satisfying! The chicken noodle is everything you would expect, light fresh broth with carrots for sweetness and hearty egg noodles.

If you like sweet, buttery animal fat laden baked goods, go elsewhere. Heidie’s uses organic fruits with no added sweeteners for the sublime educated palate.

Fresh and delicious, worth every penny!

Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital : URINALYSIS: An Essential Piece of the Health Puzzle

Urine evaluation is a noninvasive, inexpensive, easy collection test. The veterinarians at Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital recommend submitting a urine sample for laboratory analysis for all dogs and cats every 6 months. Urine gives us a window into the kidney function, sugar regulation (diabetes), developing bladder crystals and stones, urinary tract infection, bladder tumors, metabolic/hormonal diseases (thyroid/adrenal), and protein losing diseases such as Lyme Disease and hypertension, which may not be apparent in the early stages when doctors can help the most. Wellness is aimed at prevention of disease and early detection.

During the months of July and August, with the help of our laboratory, we are able to discount the urinalysis service by 28%. Call a Client Care Representative today at 201-447-6000 to ask about this discounted service and how to best collect a urine sample. You can also ask about our pre-paid urinalysis kits. After the sample is collected, we send it to the laboratory, and then the doctor will review the laboratory results to formulate a health plan for your pet’s individual needs.
