State officials, with the help of local authorities, have been conducting a gun buyback campaign in several New Jersey cities, an effort to reduce gun-related crimes that they say was planned before the Newtown, CT, shooting. Since December, the state has spent $1.2 million on five buybacks. They’ve collected a record haul of more than 9,000 firearms, including rocket launchers, assault weapons, and submachine guns.
No one seems to dispute that it’s good idea to get those items off the street. But some question whether the effort is truly effective or worth the cost. (Kalet/NJSpotlight)

I am wearing a silver hoodie that stops just below the nipples. Or, if you prefer, a baggy crop-top with a hood. The piece – this is fashion, so it has to be a “piece” – is one of a kind, a prototype. It has wide square shoulders and an overzealous zip that does up right to the tip of my nose.
It does not, it’s fair to say, make its wearer look especially cool. But that’s not really what this hoodie is about. It has been designed to hide me from the thermal imaging systems of unmanned aerial surveillance vehicles – drones. And, as far as I can tell, it’s working well.
“It’s what I call anti-drone,” explains designer Adam Harvey. “That’s the sentiment. The material in the anti-drone clothing is made of silver, which is reflective to heat and makes the wearer invisible to thermal imaging.”
The “anti-drone hoodie” was the central attraction of Harvey’s Stealth Wear exhibition, which opened in central London in January, billed as a showcase for “counter-surveillance fashions”. It is a field Harvey has been pioneering for three years now, making headlines in the tech community along the way.

New Jersey parents joining nationwide boycott of state standardized tests

A handful of New Jersey families will join an increasingly vocal national group boycotting state standardized tests this |spring, in the belief that they hinder true learning, fail to measure students’ skills, waste time and squander money.
This fledgling revolt comes at a time when education officials in New Jersey and elsewhere are relying more heavily on test scores to evaluate teachers, principals and schools, with the strong backing of President Obama and the vehement opposition of powerful teachers unions.
Jean McTavish, a Ridgewood mother and principal of an alternative high school in New York, said her 10-year-old son, Zak, used to stress out simply seeing the owl in the logo of the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge test, or NJ ASK. Zak and his 13-year-old brother, Ian, won’t be taking the tests this May.
Reader says Police need to walk the beat downtown for better Pedestrian Safety
The main problem is that most people just walk out into the road, you can not and should not do that. in the am the kids look at the ground and do not look at any thing else. how the hell can any one just stop when you have some one run into the cross walk. this law is not working.
I don’t know who came up with this shit. when i was a kid my mom and dad all ways said to me you stop and look both ways and see if it is safe.and then walk. people need to wake up.yes some drivers need to slow down in the c b d. the worst drivers are the dam n j bus’es that fly in and out of the c b d. the cops need to be on the walk and stop parking in the park . get out of the dam car and walk like years a go.
They don’t need to be in a cop car all day long.in ny they walk. in the 70,s and 80,s they walk in the c b d. we need one on one. put on a horse. they make a lot of money to be a cop in Ridgewood, it’s a real safe town they can walk around in the rain or heat. come on. the poor garbage man who takes my cans do it every day. and they make half of a cop and work a lot harder. thanks benny.

Ridgewood finds three potential sites for municipal garage

RIDGEWOOD — Officials have identified three potential locations for a new municipal garage, Deputy Mayor Al Pucciarelli said.
Otherwise known as Ridgewood’s fleet services building, the municipal garage has been deemed outdated and inefficient.
Pucciarelli has urged the Village Council to consider selling the building’s 2-acre lot and fund construction of a new facility with the proceeds.
Officials have determined that a garage would be built over 10,000 to 12,000 square feet, with a 900-square-foot outdoor area where about 30 village vehicles — mostly trucks — could be parked.
A new facility would also need a large gasoline tank and pump, as well as a dome for salt storage.
Let me try to understand this: the key incentive for small businesses to support Obamacare was that they would be able to shop for the best deals in health care superstores — called exchanges. The Administration has had three years to set up these exchanges. It has failed to do so.
This is a really bad sign. There will be those who argue that it’s not the Administration’s fault. It’s the fault of the 33 states that have refused to set up their own exchanges. Nonsense. Where was the contingency planning? There certainly are models, after all — the federal government’s own health-benefits plan (FEHBP) operates markets that exist in all 50 states. So does Medicare Advantage. But now, the Obama Administration has announced that it won’t have the exchanges ready in time, that small businesses will be offered one choice for the time being — for a year, at least. No doubt, small-business owners will be skeptical of the Obama Administration’s belief in the efficacy of the market system to produce lower prices through competition. That was supposed to be the point of this plan.
ObamaCare in Trouble? Exchange provision delayed, as lawmakers push to repeal another

Parts of ObamaCare are starting to fray, even before full implementation.
The Obama administration now says a special system of exchanges designed to make it easier for small businesses to provide insurance will be delayed an entire year — to 2015.
“Lots of small businesses struggle with providing insurance for their workers so this was supposed to facilitate it and make it easier for small business to do this,” said Jim Capretta of the Ethics and Public Policy Center. “It was a huge portion of the sale job. When they passed the law in 2010 there were many senators and members of Congress who were saying ‘I am doing this because it’s going to help small businesses.'”
The exchanges were designed to give workers a range of choices supported by dollars from their employers. But now they will have only one choice until 2015, which could mean they can’t shop for insurance that includes their current providers. Capretta said the administration is “way” behind schedule.
Pedestrian Hit Reader Says I am not surprised at this sad incident
I am not surprised at this sad incident. People in Ridgewood and most in NJ are driving like loons.
Are you aware of just how many near hits there are just in Ridgewood? It’s insane.
Go for a walk at an intersection in Ridgewood. You’ll be taking your life into your own hands. This yield to pedestrians is so not working.
It’s bad. People driving, act like the school zones and crossing guards are in their way?
Ridgewood Police, need to go plain clothes and nail these idiots. How about rotate from school zone to school zone in the mornings and afternoons? is there anything more important than the children in the school zones…please put this at the top of your need to do list! Someone please get this message to the Ridgewood Police
