Waldwick NJ, residents in a Waldwick neighborhood got quite the surprise last Friday when a family of black bears wandered through their driveways. Video footage shared by FOXNEWS on September 13th captured two adult bears and two cubs casually strolling across front lawns and around cars.
The sighting prompted an immediate alert from the township, notifying residents that the Waldwick Police and surrounding towns were aware and monitoring the situation. However, the town later reassured everyone that the bear family had “moved on out of town.”
The township’s alert also included safety tips for anyone who might encounter a black bear, emphasizing the importance of staying calm and not approaching or feeding the bears. Residents were advised to remain loud and assertive, making their presence known, and to give the bear space to escape. Importantly, the town urged people not to run or make direct eye contact, as these actions could provoke the animals.
Black bear sightings are not uncommon in the area, and while black bear attacks are rare, the alert encouraged families to develop a “Bear Plan,” complete with escape routes and tools like air horns or whistles for children. If residents spot a bear exhibiting nuisance behavior, they can report it to the DEP’s 24-hour hotline at 1-877-WARN DEP (1-877-927-6337).
For now, though, locals can breathe a sigh of relief, as the bear family has left the neighborhood.
