Hasbrouck Heights NJ, the iconic Bendix Diner, a cherished landmark in Hasbrouck Heights since 1947, was forced to close its doors on Friday following health code violations. A notice from the Health Department, dated January 10, was posted on the diner’s front door, marking the establishment as “unsatisfactory.”

Health Department Notice and Closure

Over the weekend, locals and loyal customers were met with a red notice taped to the diner’s entrance and bright yellow caution tape around the doorway. The eerie stillness—no lights and no staff—sparked conversations online.

“A ‘hot topic’ of the day caught my eye while driving by,” a local photographer, River Rail Photo, shared on Facebook. “There was a rumor of Bendix Diner closing, and apparently it was temporarily closed by the health department. Who knows what will be next…”

A Storied History

The Bendix Diner has been a cultural and culinary staple in New Jersey for decades. Featured in numerous films, TV shows, commercials, and music videos, the classic diner has captured hearts across the state and beyond.

In 2022, owner John Diakakis, who is blind, was highlighted in the documentary Bendix: Sight Unseen, showcasing his unique journey as a business owner of such a celebrated establishment.

Uncertainty Surrounding Reopening

As of Monday, the Bendix Diner is listed as “temporarily closed” on Google, but details about the health code violations remain unclear. Hasbrouck Heights and Bergen County officials have not provided additional information or commented on the restaurant’s potential reopening.

What’s Next for the Bendix Diner?

The temporary closure of the Bendix Diner has left fans hoping for its swift return. Known for its rich history and role in the community, the diner holds a special place in the hearts of locals.

For now, the future of this historic establishment remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the Bendix Diner’s legacy as a New Jersey icon is undeniable.

  1. I was in there 30 years ago and it was filthy, there’s no excuse if they want to stay in business they need to hire a cleaning crew and keep on top of it. I’m sure they can afford it. I’m sure they made their money. they’ve been a business for a very long time And look where they’re located. Talk about location location. Make the place spotless and your business will be amazing. The word spreads fast. Diners today if you notice, especially around Bergen County are pretty much spotless and extremely busy and the food is good too.
