
Hackensack School Recognized for Innovative AI-Assisted Device for Autism
Hackensack NJ, Bergen County Academies (BCA) has been named New Jersey’s state winner in the 15th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow national STEM competition, earning a $12,000 technology prize package and advancing to the next round of the prestigious contest.
BCA’s Winning STEM Solution: AI-Assisted Navigation for Autism
The five-student team from BCA stood out among seven state finalists and 300 nationwide finalists, competing in a challenge that tasks students in grades 6 through 12 with developing innovative STEM-based solutions to pressing community concerns, including climate change, mental health, and school safety.
The BCA team, comprised of Josh Mehta, Amal Kaplan, Abhi Shah, Mohit Kalia, and Rachel Kim, focused on creating a wearable AI-assisted navigation device designed to enhance safety and independence for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Next Steps in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition
With their state title secured, the BCA team now advances to the next phase of the competition, where they will work with Samsung mentors to create a three-minute video pitch showcasing their STEM solution.
