Hackensack NJ, a detective with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested for allegedly sending explicit messages and a nude photo to a minor in Monmouth County, authorities announced.
Michael Vermeylen, 42, of Oak Ridge (Morris County), was charged on Friday with third-degree endangering the welfare of a child and third-degree obscenity to minors, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Investigation Uncovers Explicit Communications
Prosecutors stated that an investigation, which involved monitoring the minor’s phone, revealed Vermeylen had been in contact with the victim—described as a known acquaintance and resident of Monmouth County.
“The investigation revealed that Vermeylen sent inappropriate sexual text messages to the victim,” officials said in a statement. “He expressed his attraction to the juvenile and sent a naked picture of himself.”
Following his arrest, Vermeylen was taken to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, where he awaits legal proceedings in Monmouth County Superior Court.
Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Responds
A spokesperson for the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Tuesday that Vermeylen has been suspended without pay as the investigation continues.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to contact MCPO Detective Anthony Lacher at 800-533-7443.
The case is being prosecuted by Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Competello of the MCPO High Tech Bureau.
