Garfield NJ, A high-ranking New Jersey law enforcement officer is facing criminal charges after prosecutors accused him of attempting to corrupt an active internal investigation.
Anthony Pizzi, a 30-year-old sergeant with the Garfield Police Department, was arrested following a probe by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities allege that Pizzi actively tried to manipulate the facts of an ongoing administrative review by instructing a subordinate officer to lie to investigators.
The Paper Trail: How the Investigation Began
According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, the integrity breakdown came to light mid-spring.
-
The Tip-Off: On April 16, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office received credible information regarding alleged witness tampering tied directly to an internal administrative investigation inside the Garfield Police Department.
-
The Allegation: Investigators quickly determined that Sergeant Pizzi had contacted a fellow Garfield police officer. During that contact, Pizzi allegedly instructed the officer to provide completely false information to internal affairs investigators.
-
The Arrest: Following a month-long review of the evidence, detectives officially arrested Pizzi on May 28.
Charges Filed and Next Steps in Court
The Prosecutor’s Office has kept the exact nature and specific details of the underlying internal affairs investigation confidential. However, the actions taken to cover it up have resulted in severe criminal liability.
Pizzi has been officially charged with third-degree tampering with witnesses.
Following his arrest and processing, the sergeant was released from custody. He is currently awaiting his first scheduled appearance in state Superior Court, located in Hackensack. According to the Garfield Police Department’s official roster, Pizzi was actively serving as a Squad A night shift supervisor prior to the charges.

uhh…no need to clutch one’s pearls here…lying is as common as breathing to so many in that line of work…
I know many cops, I always had a very good report with the police. But yes, they are trained to lie at times, especially detectives. They tried to trick you.
