Newark NJ, A week of escalating tensions outside a New Jersey immigration facility culminated in a dramatic Sunday night showdown, as police in riot gear deployed tear gas to disperse a crowd of demonstrators and arrested more than 20 people.

The crackdown took place at the Delaney Hall ICE facility in Newark, New Jersey, following multiple days of confrontational demonstrations that local officials warn had begun spiraling out of control.

While order has been restored to the facility, a fierce political battle is igniting over who bears responsibility for the unrest. Critics are pointing fingers squarely at top New Jersey Democrats, accusing them of fueling the chaos before stepping in to claim credit for the peace.

Tensions Boil Over at Delaney Hall

The protests, which initially began as a demonstration over Memorial Day weekend, saw groups of organized activists loitering around the Newark detention facility for over a week.

According to reports, the demonstrations increasingly disrupted daily operations, with some individuals behaving aggressively toward ICE agents and local facility staff. In one notable confrontation, protesters hemmed in a garbage truck driver, sparking an irate exchange that underscored the rising friction in the area.

Following mounting pressure and several close calls, Newark city officials finally established a 9:00 PM nightly curfew on Sunday, threatening remaining agitators with immediate arrest if they refused to disperse.

Tear Gas and Midnight Arrests

The scene deteriorated rapidly as the curfew deadline arrived. While the crowd dwindled to roughly 100 people after the announcement, a core group of demonstrators refused to leave the perimeter.

  • The Advance: Police units dressed in full tactical riot gear advanced on the remaining crowd, ordering them to clear the streets.

  • The Escalation: Officers fired two rounds of tear gas into the crowd as demonstrators shouted slogans, causing a large portion of the gathering to scatter.

  • The Arrests: Law enforcement corralled approximately 50 remaining individuals, ultimately taking between 20 and 25 protesters into custody.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later released a statement confirming that those arrested will face the “full weight of the law.”

The Political Backlash: Who Owns the Unrest?

The fallout from the raid has quickly transformed into a high-stakes debate over immigration enforcement and local leadership.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill addressed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “My number one priority will always be public safety, and I remain dedicated to protecting constitutional rights. We simply cannot let ICE surge into our community.”

However, political analysts and conservative commentators argue that statements like these are a form of political doublespeak. Critics argue that Democratic leaders have spent weeks undermining the legitimacy of federal immigration enforcement, effectively encouraging the high-voltage protests that eventually required riot squads to control.

High-profile Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Senator Andy Kim (D-N.J.)—who was himself caught in a cloud of pepper spray during an earlier Memorial Day rally—have heavily criticized the facility, with Jeffries calling for Delaney Hall to be permanently shut down.

With federal immigration policies remaining a central flashpoint across the country, the clash in Newark serves as a stark preview of the ongoing battle between local progressive leaders and federal enforcement mandates.
