Hackensack NJ, Bergen County residents might soon spot a charming group of puppies patrolling their neighborhoods. While these friendly animals will gladly accept affection and encouragement from the public, they are also hard at work performing a crucial environmental task: keeping local lands clear of geese.

These dedicated puppies are the newest “employees” of ReduceGoose, a company specializing in controlling the goose population across North Jersey and into New York. Under the guidance of owner Kevin Burke, these dogs patrol commercial and residential properties, making the areas less appealing to geese.

One of the new recruits, a German Longhaired Pointer puppy, is among the eight young dogs joining the ReduceGoose team. Trained to harmlessly “haze” geese, these puppies help to encourage the birds to relocate. According to the ReduceGoose website, the dogs will visit properties several times a week at various times to scare away the geese.

German Longhaired Pointers are known for their exceptional hunting instincts. The American Kennel Club describes the breed as a “superior, tried and tested hunting companion” excelling at tracking birds and small animals such as rabbits and squirrels. These traits make them ideal for the task at hand.

The primary target for these patrols is the Canada goose, a species not native to North Jersey but now prevalent throughout much of the United States. The National Audubon Society notes that while adaptable, these birds have become a nuisance in certain areas due to their prolific presence.

One of the significant concerns about geese is their droppings, which can carry diseases and pollute water sources. Additionally, with tick season and the spread of bird flu, maintaining clean and safe green spaces is more important than ever. ReduceGoose aims to protect these areas by reducing the goose population.

As these puppies embark on their new roles, they bring a blend of cuteness and practicality to the streets of Bergen County. While performing an essential service, they also offer a delightful sight for residents. So, if you see these hardworking puppies on patrol, remember they’re not just adorable—they’re on a mission to keep the community cleaner and greener.
