Football transfers are among the most expensive deals made in sports. However, in some cases, players can be signed for absolutely no transfer fee. This usually occurs when a footballer’s contract with their current club expires. They are then free to negotiate with other teams for a switch. The term for other clubs to make approaches begins six months before their contracts, in January.

Several high-profile free signings have already been made this year. So, here is the line-up of the best confirmed free transfers in 2021.

GK: Gigio Donnarumma (Milan to PSG)

The Italian number 1 emerged as the best goalkeeper in Serie A with Milan. In his last season with the club, he managed to help them reach the Champions League again. But, AC Milan could not meet his wage demands, and he had to leave the club since there was no agreement between the two parties. Paris Saint-Germain quickly capitalized on the opportunity and signed one of the best goalkeepers in the world for free.

RB: Danny Rose (Spurs to Watford)

While the former England international spent 19/20 on loan with Newcastle United, he returned to Spurs shortly after. The full-back spent the 20/21 campaign in the Spurs reserve team and did not feature in the squad. He has now been signed by Premier League returnees Watford on a free transfer as they hope to retain their place in the top flight.

CB: Eric Garcia (Man City to Barcelona)

His former coach at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, called him one of the best center-backs he has worked with. And much like his colleague, Gerard Pique, Garcia is now back at Camp Nou after a spell away at Manchester. As a result, the La Masia graduate is set to be one of the first choices for Ronald Koeman at the back. The agreement has been in place since January, but it has now been made official.

CB: David Alaba (Bayern to Real Madrid)

Arguably the best signing of this summer given the 29-year-old’s quality, Alaba joined Los Blancos from Bayern Munich. However, he decided to end his decade-long spell with the Bavarians by not renewing his contract. All that said, Alaba has truly won it all with Bayern and is now ready for his next big step with the biggest club in the world. The Austrian national team captain has signed a five-year deal with the Spanish club.

LB: Ashley Young (Inter to Aston Villa)

At the beginning of June, it seemed like Young was going to extend his stay at Inter. But, he ultimately rejected the chance to sign a new contract with the latest Serie A champions to return to England. Before leaving for Manchester United, Young featured for Aston Villa. He is now set to begin the final chapter of his career with an ambitious new team under Dean Smith.

CM: Gini Wijnaldum (Liverpool to PSG)

The Dutch international was all but set to join Barcelona as a free agent this summer. But, much like Donnarumma, PSG acted quickly. They offered him double the salary that the Blaugrana offered him and signed the midfielder in a fraction of the time. The former Liverpool man will surely help PSG’s composure in the heart of the park as they challenge for titles yet again. The 30-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the French club.

CM: Kays Ruiz (PSG to Barcelona)

He is a La Masia graduate who had a brief spell at PSG for those who have never heard of Ruiz. But, despite sporting director Leonardo wanting to renew his contract, he decided to leave the club in search of something new. And that search has brought the teenage midfielder back to Camp Nou to feature for the first team in the upcoming season potentially. Ruiz is a creative playmaker and has a great vision of the game. He is also a press-resistant midfielder and loves to dribble the ball through the opposition.

CM: Javi Martinez (Bayern to Qatar SC)

Much like David Alaba, Martinez ended his long association with Bayern this summer. He was also a part of the sextuple winning squad of 19/20 and helped Bayern Munich to nine straight Bundesliga titles. After not renewing his contract with the German giants, Martinez is set to play for Middle Eastern Qatar SC this upcoming season.

CAM: Hakan Calhanoglu (AC Milan to Inter Milan)

Calhanoglu’s transfer to Inter Milan was one of the most unexpected transfers in recent memory. The player did not reach an agreement with AC Milan for his monetary demands. And even though clubs like Manchester United were interested in him, he chose to cross the border between the city rivals.

FW: Memphis Depay (Lyon to Barcelona)

A transfer one year in the making, Depay was close to joining Barcelona last summer as well. However, Lyon and Barcelona were unable to agree on a transfer fee for him. Despite struggling in the initial stages of the season, Depay finished 20/21 as one of the top scorers in Ligue 1. He now reunites with former Dutch national team coach, Ronald Koeman.

FW: Sergio Aguero (Manchester City to Barcelona)

Kun Aguero left the Premier League as one of the best strikers in its history. While he came mighty close to winning the Champions League with Manchester City, they were beaten by Chelsea in the finals. Nevertheless, he is the fourth-highest scorer in the English league, with 184 goals for Manchester City. The veteran striker will now feature in a dream lineup alongside his best friend from the Argentina national team, Lionel Messi.

Numerous other free agents are yet to sign a contract with a professional club. Some of the most notable names include former Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos, Jerome Boateng, Elseid Hysaj, and David Luiz. The transfer window will be open until the season is underway in August. And players will have until then to formally register with professional clubs.
