Philadelphia PA, the legendary SS United States, once the pinnacle of American shipbuilding, is embarking on its final voyage. The historic 990-foot ocean liner, affectionately known as “the Big U,” is set to become the world’s largest artificial reef off the coast of Florida’s Gulf Coast.
A New Life Beneath the Sea
Currently being guided by tugboats, the fastest passenger ship ever built in America is en route from Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama, where crews will spend at least a year removing hazardous materials, including fuel. After this process, the ship—measuring more than 100 feet longer than the Titanic—will make its way to its final resting place 20 miles off the coast of Okaloosa County, Florida, where it will settle upright on the ocean floor at a depth of 180 feet.
From Transatlantic Icon to Marine Habitat
Launched in 1952, the SS United States set transatlantic speed records and completed nearly 800 crossings before retiring in 1969, as air travel overtook ocean liners in popularity. The ship ferried four U.S. presidents and hosted Hollywood legends like Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, and Grace Kelly.
A Long-Awaited Future
For decades, the SS United States sat abandoned in Philadelphia, enduring legal battles and deterioration. Now, instead of fading into obscurity, it will serve a new purpose as a thriving habitat for marine life, supporting ocean biodiversity and attracting divers from around the world.
