Fort Lee NJ, A joint investigation between New Jersey and New York authorities has led to the arrest of a 43-year-old Bronx man in connection with a suspicious vehicle fire that occurred in the early hours of March 18, 2026.
Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced that Deszon J. Moore now faces multiple felony charges, including second-degree aggravated arson, following a coordinated effort by the Bergen County Arson Task Force and the NYPD.
The Incident: A Pre-Dawn Fire on Bergen Boulevard
The case began at approximately 3:46 a.m. when the Fort Lee Police and Fire Departments rushed to a parking lot on Bergen Boulevard. They arrived to find a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. While firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, the scene immediately raised red flags for investigators.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Squad, led by Chief Jeff Angermeyer, was called in after preliminary findings suggested the fire was not accidental.
The Investigation: Tracking the Suspect Across State Lines
Detectives allege that Moore intentionally ignited the vehicle by pouring an accelerant over it before fleeing the scene and crossing back into New York. The investigation moved rapidly:
-
Identification: Within hours, the Bergen County Arson Task Force and Fort Lee Police identified Moore as the primary suspect.
-
Apprehension: Later that same day, Moore was located in the Bronx. With the assistance of the NYPD, he was taken into custody without further incident.
The Charges: Facing 20+ Years
Moore is currently held by the New York City Department of Correction pending extradition to New Jersey. He has been charged with:
-
Second-Degree Aggravated Arson (N.J.S.A. 2C:17-1a(2))
-
Third-Degree Arson (N.J.S.A. 2C:17-1b(2))
-
Third-Degree Criminal Mischief (N.J.S.A. 2C:17-3a(1))
-
Third-Degree Hindering Apprehension (N.J.S.A. 2C:29-3b(1))
Legal Disclaimer: The charges are merely accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
A Model of Inter-Agency Cooperation
Prosecutor Musella expressed his gratitude to the Fort Lee Police Department, the Fort Lee Fire Department, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, and the NYPD for their seamless collaboration in securing a swift arrest.
