> Back to School: why would the district need your “Key Pad” number when you buy something in cash?
Here’s my question: why would the district need your “Key Pad” number when you buy something in cash? I can understand POS for retail, even in an educational setting, to track inventory, sales of specific items for planning, etc. It just is weird that you even need an identifying number when it comes to cash purchases.
Am I insane? It reeks of Big Bro, Ridgewood style.
Hello Parents of Ridgewood Middle Schools and High School,
As you may know, we have implemented a Point-of-Sales system in the cafeterias at the Middle Schools and High School. In order to make the lunch period run quickly and efficiently, we ask that you remind your students that they will require a Key Pad number for purchasing items from the cafeterias, either on account or in cash. Your students key pad number can be found in Skyward Family or Student Access under Food Service. If you need assistance, please email skywardhelp@ridgewood.k12.nj.us.
Thank you for your patience during this transition period.

New Jersey is overhauling its energy policy for the second time in three years as states make rewrites to keep up with technology changes and ideological shifts.
Northeastern states have been responding lately to the abundance of natural gas drawn from the Pennsylvania section of the Marcellus Shale, a geologic formation in the Appalachian basin. It has dropped gas prices to a third of 2008 peaks. (Jordan, Gannett)
Offshore backbone developer foresees huge wind industry along Jersey coast
While New Jersey is moving to develop 1,100 megawatts of offshore wind power, Bob Mitchell envisions a much more audacious industry springing up off the coast of the Eastern Seaboard — one he claims could lower steep energy bills for consumers and create tens of thousands of jobs.
Mitchell is the chief executive officer of Atlantic Wind Connection (AWC), a company seeking to build an offshore electric backbone transmission system capable of supporting up to 7,000 megawatts of offshore wind, a $30 billion industry that would strengthen the reliability of the nation’s largest power grid. New Jersey tells Federal Energy Regulatory Commission new capacity is desperately needed
New Jersey is not the only state struggling to find a way to convince power suppliers to build new generating capacity, a problem that has spiked electric bills here and elsewhere and heightened concerns about whether there is enough juice to keep the lights on.
At a technical conference before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), New Jersey officials and others told the agency a new rule adopted this spring could make it virtually impossible to develop new generating capacity in areas along the eastern seaboard where it is desperately needed. (Johnson, NJ Spotlight)
A U.S. default isn’t a matter of “if” but “when,” David Murrin, chief investment officer at Emergent Asset Management, told CNBC. “It’s inevitable that the U.S. will default-it’s essentially an empire which is overextended and in decline-and that its financial system will go with it,” he said.
The question is: Does the U.S. default when it is forced to by the outside world, probably the Chinese, or does it take the option to default on its own terms in such a way that it may have a strategic advantage, Murrin said.
Republicans and Democrats are currently locked in a debate on how to cut the U.S. budget deficit, and on whether the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling should be raised. Both parties need to come to a consensus by Aug. 2, otherwise the country will be in a state of technical default.
In his book “Breaking the Code of History,” Murrin argues that the balance of power has shifted away from the West, with America as the superpower, towards the East, led by China.

Hackensack formally applies to reopen Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 2011 LAST UPDATED: WEDNESDAY JUNE 1, 2011, 8:47 PM BY LINDY WASHBURN AND MARY JO LAYTON STAFF WRITERS THE RECORD
Hackensack University Medical Center formally applied for state permission Wednesday to reopen Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood as a 128-bed full-service community hospital. If approved, the for-profit hospital would open late next year.
The Westwood hospital closed due to bankruptcy in November 2007. The new plan aims to address the state’s looming physician shortage as well as provide patient care to the northeastern part of Bergen County, which has been underserved since Pascack closed due to bankruptcy in November 2007, said Robert C. Garrett, Hackensack’s president and chief executive officer.
The application is “the next phase of restoring much needed healthcare services to the Pascack Valley and Northern Valley,” Garrett said.
Although a final decision on the application is not expected until November, Hackensack’s joint-venture partner appears confident enough of the application’s success to have named a chief executive officer for the new facility.
