>Americans recall Reagan legacy on his 100th birthday

Ronald Reagan – 40th President

At the end of his two terms in office, Ronald Reagan viewed with satisfaction the achievements of his innovative program known as the Reagan Revolution, which aimed to reinvigorate the American people and reduce their reliance upon Government. He felt he had fulfilled his campaign pledge of 1980 to restore “the great, confident roar of American progress and growth and optimism.”

On February 6, 1911, Ronald Wilson Reagan was born to Nelle and John Reagan in Tampico, Illinois. He attended high school in nearby Dixon and then worked his way through Eureka College. There, he studied economics and sociology, played on the football team, and acted in school plays. Upon graduation, he became a radio sports announcer. A screen test in 1937 won him a contract in Hollywood. During the next two decades he appeared in 53 films.

From his first marriage to actress Jane Wyman, he had two children, Maureen and Michael. Maureen passed away in 2001. In 1952 he married Nancy Davis, who was also an actress, and they had two children, Patricia Ann and Ronald Prescott.

As president of the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan became embroiled in disputes over the issue of Communism in the film industry; his political views shifted from liberal to conservative. He toured the country as a television host, becoming a spokesman for conservatism. In 1966 he was elected Governor of California by a margin of a million votes; he was re-elected in 1970.

Ronald Reagan won the Republican Presidential nomination in 1980 and chose as his running mate former Texas Congressman and United Nations Ambassador George Bush. Voters troubled by inflation and by the year-long confinement of Americans in Iran swept the Republican ticket into office. Reagan won 489 electoral votes to 49 for President Jimmy Carter.

On January 20, 1981, Reagan took office. Only 69 days later he was shot by a would-be assassin, but quickly recovered and returned to duty. His grace and wit during the dangerous incident caused his popularity to soar.

Dealing skillfully with Congress, Reagan obtained legislation to stimulate economic growth, curb inflation, increase employment, and strengthen national defense. He embarked upon a course of cutting taxes and Government expenditures, refusing to deviate from it when the strengthening of defense forces led to a large deficit.

A renewal of national self-confidence by 1984 helped Reagan and Bush win a second term with an unprecedented number of electoral votes. Their victory turned away Democratic challengers Walter F. Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro.

In 1986 Reagan obtained an overhaul of the income tax code, which eliminated many deductions and exempted millions of people with low incomes. At the end of his administration, the Nation was enjoying its longest recorded period of peacetime prosperity without recession or depression.

In foreign policy, Reagan sought to achieve “peace through strength.” During his two terms he increased defense spending 35 percent, but sought to improve relations with the Soviet Union. In dramatic meetings with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, he negotiated a treaty that would eliminate intermediate-range nuclear missiles. Reagan declared war against international terrorism, sending American bombers against Libya after evidence came out that Libya was involved in an attack on American soldiers in a West Berlin nightclub.

By ordering naval escorts in the Persian Gulf, he maintained the free flow of oil during the Iran-Iraq war. In keeping with the Reagan Doctrine, he gave support to anti-Communist insurgencies in Central America, Asia, and Africa.

Overall, the Reagan years saw a restoration of prosperity, and the goal of peace through strength seemed to be within grasp.

>Jared Loughner, Alleged Shooter in Gabrielle Giffords Attack, Described by Classmate as “Left-Wing Pothead”
By James King, Sat., Jan. 8 2011 @ 5:02PM

A classmate of the man accused of shooting Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords this morning describes him as “left wing” and a “pot head” in a series of posts on Twitter this afternoon.

Caitie Parker did not immediately respond to our request for an interview, but her “tweets” in the hours after the shooting paint a picture of Jared Loughner as a substance-abusing loner who had met Giffords before the shooting. She says, Loughner described the congresswoman as “stupid and unintelligent.”

>If they really want to attract business to NJ and create jobs, they need to do the following

I wish them well in their efforts to attract business to NJ. However, if they really want to attract business to NJ and create jobs, they need to do the following:

1. Improve NJ’s university system. NJ exports thousands of top students to other states every year, many of whom never return.

2. Adopt a Right to Work union law, which makes union memebership optional.

3. Lower taxes by cutting the public sector, including making public sector workers pay far more for their benefits than they do now.

Why do states like Virginia and Texas attract jobs? They are have done a far better job than NJ at all three of the above items.

>Village of Ridgewood : That newbie stuff is getting old.

That newbie stuff is getting old. Take a look at the Board of Education members. Not one of them is a so called “newbie” and time and again they have dished out our tax dollars as if they were printing the currency in the basement of Cottage Place. It was not the “newbies” who manipulated and pushed the December bond referendum: it was deeply entrenched sports families, who have been in town forever, along with long term BOE members. The lights are the result of the same alliance. Brogan has been on the BOE since 1996 – Reilly from 1990 – 2005 and elected again last year while Hutton is on his 3rd 3 year term. Lenhard has been on for a number of years and prior to that was the #1 cheerleader of the “vote Yes for the BOE budget” pushing for more and more BOE funding and higher salaries. These are not “Newbies” so stop blaming the Newcomers for the problems. We should be happy they want to invest in our village.

I agree with the original post that the Village is changing. The contractor who wants to build on the corner of Ridgewood and Walthery should be told “no thanks” as should be Maple/Franklin corner and Valley! No to all of them! Preserve the Village!

Developing Story: Rep. Giffords Shot in Tucson, Ariz

Good day,

I just read your post about the shootings in Arizona that claimed the life of a little girl and seriously injured congresswoman Giffords. I know many people have been speculating about the incident, but I liked the way you handled the news on your blog by stating what happened. So many people and news groups have stated that it was “politically motivated” shootings, or that Sarah Palin stirred this up by her map showing the districts where she wanted to up-seat certain politicians who are in favor of Obamacare. Regardless, it’s been a tragedy, and I think you did a good job telling the story to your readers. I wanted to share the story in a way I think you may be interested in seeing: https://bit.ly/iiyb6S.

As you saw, it doesn’t give any certain views or ideas about what happened, instead the video just gives the details and explains what happened. While the story is still developing, I think it will be in the news for quite some time (with good reason). I agree with you that I think the killer/shooter is just simply out there. Anyway, I hope you can use this video or found it useful.

Take care,

Daniel

Downtown Ridgewood simply oozes Americana. Its wide, tree-lined streets and avenues unfurl before stylish shops whose buildings date back to the grand styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For me, the architectural centerpiece of the downtown historic district is the splendid 1916 Mission-style train station. It’s best appreciated when seen, just as the village’s restaurants are best admired when visited.

A 22-year-old man named Jared Loughner has been arrested for attacking a group of people outside an Arizona grocery store with a firearm. Wounded in the attack was Arizona Representative Gabrielle Gifford and killed in the attack was Federal Judge John Roll. A 9-year-old girl was also killed in the nearly one dozen victims. Five deaths are being reported. (Judge Roll bio, pictured right)

Congresswoman Giffords is being reported as having survived with prospects for recovery good.
The killer is one prime nut.

>Have State, Bergen Dems hit rock bottom?

>Have State, Bergen Dems hit rock bottom?

Party needs leadership and unity if they are to take on the likes of Christie, Donovan and a rejuvenated GOP!

https://natoday.net/havestatebergendems.html

Sometimes things have to go badly before they get better.

In the case of the Bergen County Democratic party, the meteoric rise to power under the leadership of former county chairman Joe Ferriero has been literally wiped clean in two election cycles as county Republicans have won five freeholder seats, the county executive and the office of sheriff!

Democrats have been reduced to just two of the five seats on the seven-member board of freeholders and now hold only one of the three constitutional offices with incumbent Surrogate Mike Dressler.

At the legislative level, Governor Chris Christie is making an all out effort to reduce the number of Democrats in the legislature and districts 36, 37 and 38 are prime targets of Republican redistricting should they control the map in the next cycle.

A Republican-authored map in all probability could wipeout incumbents Paul Sarlo and Robert Gordon in the senate as well as assembly members Connie Wagner, Joan Voss, Gary Schaer and newly appointed Nutley assemblyman Kevin Ryan.

To Sarlo’s credit, he has secured a seat on the commission but his presence does little to ensure what map will ultimately be put in place by the courts.

Too make matters worse, the federal census has determined New Jersey will lose a congressional seat and thus an electoral vote come the 2012 presidential elections.

In effect you have thirteen incumbents seeking re-election in just twelve districts.

Congressman Steve Rothman of Englewood, long a friend to North Arlington Democrats could be a casualty of GOP gerrymandering and could find himself seeking re-election in another district against a neighboring incumbent such as Democrat Bill Pascrell or Scott Garrett, a conservative Republican.

Hospital awaits Pascack ruling

Sunday, January 9, 2011
BY LINDY WASHBURN
THE RECORD
STAFF WRITER

The state Health Department has not decided whether to give Hackensack University Medical Center an opportunity to start over again with its application to reopen the former Pascack Valley Hospital.

“It is under review,” said Donna Leusner, a department spokesman, of Hackensack’s Dec. 16 petition to the state health commissioner.

The Westwood hospital closed more than three years ago.

Hackensack’s 2-inch-thick petition, obtained by The Record last week, asks Commissioner Poonam Alaigh to call for applications “to open a new hospital in Westwood.” But it recommends criteria that would allow only one entity — Hackensack and its for-profit partner — to apply.

“In view of the immediate need for this service, and the lead time involved in bringing a new hospital into operation,” the document says, “we recommend that applicants should be limited to those who own property that is currently zoned for hospital use” in Westwood.

>Man linked to Giffords shooting rampage called ‘very disturbed’

>Man linked to Giffords shooting rampage called ‘very disturbed’

By Tim Steller, Arizona Daily Star | Posted: Saturday, January 8, 2011 3:11 pm

The man linked to the shooting today of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others is 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, the Associated Press reported.

Saturday afternoon, police surrounded a house at 7700 N. Soledad Ave., which is the address listed by a man with the same name on a variety of online accounts and in the volunteer registry for the 2010 Tucson Festival of Books. The home is near West Magee Road and North Thornydale Road on the northwest side, about five miles from the shooting scene.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik would not confirm Loughner is the suspected shooter. He said the person arrested for the shooting is uninjured and uncooperative.

The suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers, but the threats weren’t against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Dupnik said. The suspect is unstable, Dupnik said, but the sheriff would not say he is “insane.”

A former classmate of Loughner at Pima Community College said he was “obviously very disturbed.”
“He disrupted class frequently with nonsensical outbursts,” said Lynda Sorenson, who took a math class with Loughner last summer at Pima Community College’s Northwest campus.

Sorenson doesn’t recall if he ever made any threats or uttered political statements but he was very disruptive, she said. He was asked to leave the pre-algebra class several times and eventually was barred from class, said Sorenson, a Tucson resident.

Jan. 8, 2011 03:49 PM
The Arizona Republic

The killing of U.S. District Judge John M. Roll comes two years after he received death threats while he presided over a $32 million civil-rights lawsuit filed by illegal immigrants against an Arizona rancher.

When Roll ruled the case could go forward, U.S. Marshal David Gonzales said in 2009 that talk-radio shows cranked up the controversy and spurred audiences into making threats.

In one afternoon, Roll logged more than 200 phone calls. Callers threatened the judge and his family. They posted personal information about Roll online.

>NJTPC Condemns Arizona Shooting

“This morning, in an unspeakable tragedy, a number of Americans were shot in Tucson, Arizona, at a constituent meeting with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords… We do not yet have all the answers. What we do know is that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society. I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in keeping Representative Giffords, the victims of this tragedy, and their families in our prayers.

“I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff. An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country.”
– Speaker of the House, John Boehner

The NJ Tea Party Coalition joins with all peace loving Americans who condemn violence. Please pray for all who were hurt in today’s shooting, their families and their loved ones.

>The character of Ridgewood changed when they subdivided the property across from the high school at what used to be known as the Mastin House and the windmill was torn down

For me, the character of Ridgewood changed when they subdivided the property across from the high school at what used to be known as the Mastin House. The windmill was torn down, the put up the stone house to the south of the Mastin house and then, a few years ago, the house at the corner property on Brookside and E.Ridgewood. It’s a beautiful house but the promise that sledding would be allowed was neutralized by the huge retaining was that destroyed the hill and the homewoner put up mature trees and other plantings which completely block the view of the Brook and the hill. Not saying I would not have done the same thing if I was a newbie but . . . I’m just sayin’

The sight of the Mastin house standing majestically above the Brook was Ridgewood to me.

Wasn’t it though? A wonderful windmill it was too. In the late 90’s it was only 1 of 4 of its kind left standing in NJ. Years ago, the snow covered hill swept laughing students perilously close to the brook while seated in their lunch trays.

Now, the folks who live there can only imagine what it might have been like. As for the new neighbor to the north, who planted mature pines, he was only trying to add value to his home. After all, who wants to look out onto an artificial lawn in front of the high school?

I think the northern neighbor did a good job with landscaping and it looks terrific however, when they did the landscaping, there was no artificial turf. I would have done the same thing as the homeowner; my point was it blocked the view of the hill and the brook and the large retaining wall took away the hill.

I once wound up in the brook trying to stop my child’s speeding sled as it came down the hill far to fast!
