>Village Council Elections : postmortem

>ok, here’s the postmortem of the election (in my view)….

1. Ridgewood voters will not fall for McGreevey election techniques. They are too smart. Pressuring everyone you know to put signs on their lawn does not guarantee they’ll vote for you.

As I said in an earlier post, from my personal discussions with a lot of residents, C/D support was a mile wide and an inch deep. Walsh/Riche, who spent a fraction of what C/D spent, had a much better turnout. But if you drove around the west side, it would have appeared that C/D would have won handily, and they didn’t.

The loudest voice does not win in a town such as ours.

Understated advertising and intelligent arguments are the way to win.

2. The town is sick of tax and spend liberals in office.

The last two elections have confirmed it. Ridgewood needs to get its fiscal house in order. That includes the school system. Suggest otherwise at your own peril.

We’re not so dumb as not to realize that the school spending has become an arms race you can’t win. Get back to basics.

Similarly, voters realized that if Cronk was elected, his wife (co-chair of the RPP) would suddenly reappear and it would have been much easier to push thru an expensive redo of Graydon.

Prediction: Graydon’s attendance is much better this summer since the water quality has improved and the RPP is not as big as a force as it was two years ago when it was scaring everybody away with negative advertising.

3. Valley Hospital growth needs to be contained

While we all appreciate the benefits of the hospital, its requests need to be balanced with the community’s at large.

Similar to the school system and corporations in general, the hospital has a tendency to “empire build” and if left unchecked will overexpand beyond what is truly necessary.

Good job Ridgewood!

>Unions likely to oppose Christie’s proposed spending, labor restrictions

New Jersey’s public employees unions are likely to push back hard against a package of proposed laws to reduce government spending that Gov. Chris Christie is unveiling Monday. Christie’s proposed reforms include putting a permanent 2.5 percent limit on annual raises for public workers and forbidding property tax increases of more than 2.5 percent without voter approval. >Rep. Scott Garrett :YouCut Launch! Help us Fight the Deficit

>Our national debt is simply unsustainable. We have reached a point where our current debt and deficit levels are hurting our economy and the prospects for job creation and future economic growth.

It is almost unheard of for Congress to consider bills to actually eliminate wasteful programs or reduce unnecessary spending. That’s why we are launching YouCut, a first of its kind project designed to reverse the culture of spending in Washington to a culture of savings.

The YouCut project is designed to challenge Congress’s culture of spending. It is a first of its kind effort designed to engage the public in refocusing Congress’s priorities. With a deficit near $1.5 trillion, we don’t think it is too much to ask of Congress to spend some time debating bills to actually reduce spending.

How it Works: The project revolves around a very simple two step process:

1. Each week, the House Economic Recovery Working Group will post online (at https://republicanwhip.house.gov/YouCut )a list of five proposals to reduce wasteful or unnecessary spending. The public will have a chance to vote online or on their cell phones on the proposal they would most like to see Congress take up the next week. (You Vote)

2. And the next week House Republicans will force the House to vote on whether or not to take up and debate the bill. (We Cut)
Each week relevant floor speeches, bill summaries, and vote tallies will be posted online for the public to review. The American people will also have an opportunity to recommend their proposals to reduce wasteful spending. Each and every day, families in New Jersey have been forced to make tough decisions on a daily basis—cutting back on things they realize they can no longer afford. Why should the federal government act any differently?

>School Budget: to say there is no fat is laughable.

>i do not agree one bit. i have three young children and i do care very much about the schools. but to say there is no fat is laughable.

first of all, teachers are still getting raises this year that probably cost $1m. i know they have contracts but contracts are meant to be reopened when they needed. Other towns did it. Ridgewood can too.

second, the empire building being done right now with the bond issuance is insane. we can’t maintain our current physical plant on the regular operating budget (hence the deferred maintenance in the bond) but we are ADDING MORE TO THE PLANT with the bond. give me a break. turf, bleachers, dozen classrooms, etc. It’s fat.

I’ve had this argument a dozen times on this blog. People have said, things are different now, we need more space, etc. I think that is b.s. The people that say we need all of this shit are probably adding on to their mcmansion-wannabe and trying to get 100% lot coverage past the zoning board. kids do not need all of this stuff.

this is going to bankrupt the town and its residents.

so, in my opinion, there is more to cut. reopen teacher contracts. reopen administrator packages (i.e. fishbein), cut back on the proposed expenditures from the bond referendum.

that would be a start.

when i said there is fat, there is more than just the basic salaries. the benefits need to be cut asap. no normal orgnization would stand for 20+% benefit cost growth. cut back on the bennys and/or make the teachers pay more (if they pay anything at all).

btw i pay over $5k for my share of my medical from work. teachers have to suck it up.

the real answer to the negotiations with the union is coming:

state negotiators appointed to the towns to negotiate the teacher contracts.

this will level the playing field.

no more amateurs at the BOE taking on professional negotiators.

this is what i hear is coming down the road from a reliable source in trenton.

>Congratulations Bernie and Tom from Concerned Residents of Ridgewood

Bernadette and Tom,

Congratulations on your resounding win last night. By winning with such a large margin, the people of Ridgewood have also given you a strong mandate to take with you to the council.

The election fought over:
· Revitalizing downtown
· Fiscal responsibility
· Preserving Graydon
· Limiting excessive expansion by Valley hospital

…and another one was added last night; backlash against attempts to win the vote through slick marketing! Yesterday people chose substance and integrity over hype!

Congratulations again,

>The Fred d’Elia Memorial Day Ridgewood Run !

>The Fred d’Elia Memorial Day Ridgewood Run is a family-focused day of events that provide a fun environment in a festive open-park atmosphere. Seven distinct events provide the center of activity. They start at 8:30 AM and continue until after the conclusion of the Fun Run at noon. The road races are run through the tree-lined streets of the Village of Ridgewood NJ. Ridgewood is located in Bergen County bordering Rockland, Westchester, and New York counties.

The close proximity to New York City gives families from the NY Metropolitan area a chance to celebrate the holiday by spending a fun-filled weekend that concludes with a day of healthy exercise. At the Ridgewood Run, one spouse might run the 10K, the other the 5K, and then accompany the children in the Fun Run.

The Ridgewood Run has established itself as the must-run road race in the NY-NJ-Connecticut area on Memorial Day. The North Jersey Masters (NJM), the premier running club in Northern NJ, has been the organizer of the race since it’s inception in 1976. In those years NJM has built a reputation for hospitality and the ability to put on a quality day for all participants (see Race History).

Race Amenities in 2010 are: commerative t-shirt, a Flat & Fast Course, D-Tag Timing, a Baggage Check Area, Mile Clocks, Water Stops, Certified Routes. Other extras are: a Family Team competition in the 5K, Hotel discounts, and Photographs by Ken Shelton Photography.

Awards and Prizes are plentiful: 1) Prize money to the top three finishers in the Elite 1-Mile races, top 3 finishers in the 5K, and the top 10 Masters finishers in the 10K. 2) New Balance Gift Certificates to the top three finishers in each five-year age-group bracket. 3) Finisher’s Medal to all registered finishers of the Ridgewood YMCA Fun Run/Health Walk.

>Readers Allege bullying epidemic at B F Middle School while administrators do little or nothing

>
the Ridgewood blog recieved so many of these coments they could not be ignored:

Hey here’s a little story from last year that will give you a clue about how Mr. Orsini handles a child’s repeated cries for help from him regarding another child who had been relentlessly bullying her at school (not on line).

He ignored her cries for help repeatedly, did nothing to help her at all, took no action, didn’t even approach the issue with the bully’s parents and did not discipline the bully in any way. Yet when this poor victim finally reached her breaking point, after making a more that noble effort to make peace with this bully, and fought back, she was suspended. THE VICTIM WAS SUSPENDED, NOT THE BULLY. Why? Because administrators like Orsini are trained to make problems go away, not solve them. Usually this happens at the expense of the victim.

If you think that Mr. Orsini spends more time with and knows more about your child than you do, then I feel nothing less than pity for your child because you are a PATHETIC parent.

It isn’t up to a school principal to know and raise your child. It’s up to you.

Sounds like nothing much has changed there since 2006. My son was bullied at BF and physically assualted. Mr. Orsini would not speak to me when I went to the school. He offered me no sympathy and took no responsibility, He sent Lorna Oates to talk to me. When I insisted upon talking to him, he would not come out of his office and never called me as requested. When I finally got him on the phone, he scolded me for questioning why he never imposed a suspension or otherwise upon the bully. He told me: “I make the rules, not the parents!” Didn’t this idiot realize that I could sue Ridgewood up one side and down the other?

He did not have an antibullying program at the time or did he call the police liason officer when the incident occurred. So, now he is the Crusader against Facebook? Spare me! He is lucky that he was not sued or fired for that serious screwup but the Bd of Ed always sweeps their mistakes under the rug.

The following year, my friend’s son was repeatedly bullied by another boy. His grades tanked and he was suffering great mental anguish. His parents finally took him out of the school to a private school when Tony completely ignored the problem. Again, after writing a letter to the Bd of Ed and meeting with the superintendent at the time, nothing was ever done except rewarding Orsini with tenure. What a wonderful school district!!

>Leave Graydon alone.

>

IMG00002

I grew up in Ridgewood and have seen many changes take place. I have heard people say that the water in Graydon is dirty. The water dept tests the water on a continuous basis and has been doing it for years. First off, is Graydon a pool or a pond? I believe it to be a pond or a small lake. A swimming pool is artificially built.

Graydon was a small pond the was willed to the Vets Field by Mr Graydon along with the Village Hall building and Vets Field. People want to cement it. Why? I have heard numerous reasons and none of them carry any credence. Graydon has been the way it is for 100 years and it should be kept that way for at least another 100 years. People from all around love Graydon for what it is not for what it could be.

Leave Graydon alone. Keep it as it should be. A natural pond feed by Aquifiers, not a artificial cement hole in the ground filled with chlorinated water. If people want Graydon to be cememnted, will they also want all the other swimming places in the area to cemented? One more item. I noticed almost everyone posting here has decided to use anonymous instead of using their name. Interesting to say the least.

>Ban Facebook : the Nanny State

>Paper and pencils can be used to draw inappropriate, hate filled, pictures messages and ideas – and you could poke someone’s eye out. They could even be used to lure your child into a dangerous situation. Should we (and could we if we tried?) cut off access to keep our children safe? No, because they are everywhere and too valuable in so many ways – so as parents and educators we monitor and teach ethical, appropriate, safe use.

Over 200,000 children are injured using playground equipment each year – some are killed. Should we (and could we if we tried?) cut access to playground equipment to keep our children safe? No, because they’re eventually going to find play equipment and playing is too valuable an experience – so as parents and educators we monitor and teach ethical, appropriate, safe use.

50,000 people die or are injured in swimming accidents each year. Should we (and could we if we tried?) cut access to swimming to keep our children safe? No, because pools and lakes and ponds are everywhere and it would be dangerous if they fell in and it is too valuable and healthy a skill – so as parents and educators we monitor and teach ethical, appropriate, safe use.

30,000 people are killed and thousands more injured in auto crashes each year. Should we (and could we if we tried?) cut access to cars and driving to keep our children safe? No, cars are everywhere and driving is too valuable – so as parents and educators we monitor and teach ethical, appropriate, safe use.

Phones are used for criminal activities, even luring kids away from home. Should we (and could we if we tried?) cut off access to phones to keep our children safe? No, phones are everywhere and they are too valuable – so as parents and educators we monitor and teach ethical, appropriate, safe use.

There are applications of technology that can expose your child to inappropriate, hate filled, pictures, messages and ideas. Technology and the internet are everywhere. Do we cut off access? (and could we if we tried?) Or are these applications too educationally valuable? – As parents and educators it would be better if we monitored and taught ethical, appropriate, safe use.

Otherwise who will teach them about these things and where will they learn about them? Just a thought.
