N.J. energy policy receives another revision

New Jersey is overhauling its energy policy for the second time in three years as states make rewrites to keep up with technology changes and ideological shifts.

Northeastern states have been responding lately to the abundance of natural gas drawn from the Pennsylvania section of the Marcellus Shale, a geologic formation in the Appalachian basin. It has dropped gas prices to a third of 2008 peaks.  (Jordan, Gannett)

Offshore backbone developer foresees huge wind industry along Jersey coast

While New Jersey is moving to develop 1,100 megawatts of offshore wind power, Bob Mitchell envisions a much more audacious industry springing up off the coast of the Eastern Seaboard — one he claims could lower steep energy bills for consumers and create tens of thousands of jobs.

Mitchell is the chief executive officer of Atlantic Wind Connection (AWC), a company seeking to build an offshore electric backbone transmission system capable of supporting up to 7,000 megawatts of offshore wind, a $30 billion industry that would strengthen the reliability of the nation’s largest power grid.  (Johnson, NJ Spotlight)

New Jersey tells Federal Energy Regulatory Commission new capacity is desperately needed

New Jersey is not the only state struggling to find a way to convince power suppliers to build new generating capacity, a problem that has spiked electric bills here and elsewhere and heightened concerns about whether there is enough juice to keep the lights on.

At a technical conference before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), New Jersey officials and others told the agency a new rule adopted this spring could make it virtually impossible to develop new generating capacity in areas along the eastern seaboard where it is desperately needed.  (Johnson, NJ Spotlight)

N.J. Bar Association backs judges, government lawyers in their bid to avoid health and pension benefit hikes

New Jersey’s judges and government-paid attorneys want to see the recently approved increase in the cost of health and pension benefits as it affects them repealed by the Legislature and the governor and the New Jersey State Bar Association on Thursday announced it plea has its support.

The judges and Bar Association argue the legislation threatens the independence of the judiciary and will impair the ability of courts and the government to fulfill their duties to the public.  (Hester, New Jersey Newsroom)

>Welcome to the third world

>Welcome to the third world

A U.S. default isn’t a matter of “if” but “when,” David Murrin, chief investment officer at Emergent Asset Management, told CNBC.  “It’s inevitable that the U.S. will default-it’s essentially an empire which is overextended and in decline-and that its financial system will go with it,” he said.

The question is: Does the U.S. default when it is forced to by the outside world, probably the Chinese, or does it take the option to default on its own terms in such a way that it may have a strategic advantage, Murrin said.

Republicans and Democrats are currently locked in a debate on how to cut the U.S. budget deficit, and on whether the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling should be raised. Both parties need to come to a consensus by Aug. 2, otherwise the country will be in a state of technical default.

In his book “Breaking the Code of History,” Murrin argues that the balance of power has shifted away from the West, with America as the superpower, towards the East, led by China.

He believes the U.S. cannot afford to compete with the rise of Eastern powers.

Revamped Energy Master Plan casts shadow on solar

Gov. Chris Christie yesterday scaled back the state’s renewable energy goals, releasing a revamped Energy Master Plan (EMP) that questions New Jersey’s aggressive targets for solar energy, while pushing for more nuclear power and a bigger dependence on natural gas.  (Johnson, NJ Spotlight)

Hackensack formally applies to reopen Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood

THE RECORD

Hackensack University Medical Center formally applied for state permission Wednesday to reopen Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood as a 128-bed full-service community hospital. If approved, the for-profit hospital would open late next year.

The Westwood hospital closed due to bankruptcy in November 2007.
The new plan aims to address the state’s looming physician shortage as well as provide patient care to the northeastern part of Bergen County, which has been underserved since Pascack closed due to bankruptcy in November 2007, said Robert C. Garrett, Hackensack’s president and chief executive officer.

The application is “the next phase of restoring much needed healthcare services to the Pascack Valley and Northern Valley,” Garrett said.

Although a final decision on the application is not expected until November, Hackensack’s joint-venture partner appears confident enough of the application’s success to have named a chief executive officer for the new facility.

>Classroom grading is an attack on students

>Classroom grading is an attack on students

It can hardly be denied that there are factors outside a student’s control that might affect his grades. How smart he is, how much his parents support education, how nutritious the food in his home is, and how much his older brother distracts him with PlayStation 3.

Some parents might put on SportsCenter at 11pm Eastern time. Others don’t. It’s hardly a level playing field.

Since a student has no control over these kinds of things, and since some students face a lot more of these obstacles than others, grading simply isn’t fair. Why should I get a better grade than you just because my home life makes it easier for me to perform? And as we’ve learned from teachers’ unions, it’s better to have no evaluation system than one that could be unfair.

There’s another reason too. It’s an ugly one: favoritism. We all know the teacher’s pet is likely to get a good grade, while the charmless face a much tougher slog. That’s not fair either.

Scores of residents were out in force last week at Chris Ridge Service on Park Avenue in Rutherford to express their support at a rally held by New Jersey State Senator Paul Sarlo and members of Americans for Prosperity (AFP) opposing New Jersey’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a regional coalition of mid-Atlantic and northeastern states to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. >Ridgewood Baseball/Softball Opening Day Parade

>Baseball/Softball Parade will coincide with big game
Tuesday, April 26, 2011
THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

There is an interesting twist to the annual Ridgewood Baseball and Softball Association (RBSA) Opening Day Parade and Family Fair being held this Saturday, April 30.

In past years, the parade was the traditional starting point of the village’s youth baseball and softball seasons. However, because of calendar issues with school break, as well as the Easter and Passover holidays, fields have been opened and play already has begun.

The new, later Opening Day Parade date not only increases the chances for ideal weather but also opens up other opportunities to celebrate the game.
