Reader says , “this appointment is only for a few months and then we will all be able to vote for the 3 open positions”

BOE

“We can all watch the same meeting, hear the same conversation and yet come to different conclusions.

I heard a board that wants to make sure the new member has the time to do the job, they don’t want to end up with another new board member that misses meetings and doesn’t have time to serve on committees. The next board member needs to pull their weight.

State of New Jersey finds on a single day last spring, Motorists Illegally Passed Stopped School Buses on 793 Occasions

Ridgewood NJ, As more than 1.4 million students across New Jersey return to school next week, the State Division of Highway Traffic Safety and the New Jersey Department of Education are calling on motorists and students to be extra vigilant on the roadways and obey traffic laws, especially in school zones and along school bus routes.

The first weeks of school can be the most dangerous time on the road for students as they acclimate to rising early and crossing busy streets, and as motorists adjust to sharing the road with school buses.

Reader Says Grads Fleeing the State ,”It’s actually a yearly testament to the consistently high comparative standards of our best high schools, including RHS”

Screenshot 20190620 213814 Facebook 1561081139460

“The flight of New Jersey high school graduates has a big part of its origin in the sheer quality of their academic records, putting them, as a group, at a competitive advantage over the high school graduates of more or less all other U.S. states. For example, In no other US. state is the competition as stiff, year in and year out, as it is in New Jersey for the status of National Merit Commended Student, National Merit Semifinalist and National Merit Finalist, all of which are limited to a fixed (and miniscule) percentage of the total number of sophomore PSAT test takers in New Jersey. The sheer number of top shelf high school graduates New Jersey consistently produces every year compared to those of all other states, even other Northeast states, is remarkable. Top colleges all around the country regularly lure a huge chunk of our best graduates out of state to pursue their undergraduate degrees. Why? Because without those top NJ HS grads leavening their incoming freshman class every year the average credentials of their respective student bodies would objectively begin to slip and make them less competitive over time. Is it a really any surprise that many of our high school graduates don’t return after college? It’s actually a yearly testament to the consistently high comparative standards of our best high schools, including RHS.”

Reader Goes Off on the Idea of “Buying Extra Credit”

Dan Fishbein 10

After watching the video, I was dismayed at our Superintendent’s ingenious explanation of “extra credit” as not an “academic credit” but merely a reward for the “most boxtops, etc” turned in. A reward benefits the class and they do “get something extra but it is NOT A HIGHER GRADE!” He also states “that extra credit has been awarded for decades” which is an accurate statement only if you do not count “extra credit” as a grade point issue. He is trying to pass it off as “One of those things that has always been done”. by including class rewards THAT DO NOT INCLUDE GRADE POINTS but are merely “rewards”.

Delightful weather on Saturday encouraged crowds along the Schuylkill River for the qualifying heats while the finals and semifinals on Sunday couldn’t have been soggier. The wet conditions did nothing to dampen the athletes’ moral, with 11 boats advanced to the finals and 5 boats earning medals.

Reader Comments on School Ranking Fairness

Ridgewood Police at RHS

Schooldigger, I’m afraid your list somewhat betrays you. I assumed you noticed in the last year summarized, Ridgewood is down 2 points. Little by little Ridgewood has consistently gone downwards. A main problem is the unfairness of ranking private schools and county Academies–all of which attract the top students in any school–against public schools which must educate every student who applies. It is the true “apples vs oranges” comparison. That alone would automatically force lowering of the ranks of any public school. But Ridgewood is no where near being at the top of the public school list. Ridgewood has always had problems–terrible tenured teachers and some other very strange teachers who bullied their students–but basically it provided a great education for self-starters. Lazy kids still did not work up to their educational level–and I’m sure that is true today. Another main difference is that the respect for teachers and authority figures has declined drastically. Too many students think the whole world revolves around them and rebel against anyone telling them what to do. We also have more parents who’ll rush to the school or school board to complain that ” their darling child could never do anything wrong”. Believe me, this is not a new problem, it’s just gotten worse. A friend, who retired at least 15 years ago from being a kindergarten teacher, said that “she never thought she’d be happy to retire, but the kids today…”

Reader says , Voting no for first time in 40 years, for the sake of the Village”

414kh6Q 2HL

” Voting no for first time in 40 years, for the sake of the Village.
The math is simple – – taxes get to the point where i decide its time leave my 4 bedroom, 4 bath house. Right now, the Village makes a lot off of my empty nest. But if they tax me to the point where i leave, then a family with three children move in at a cost of 10 to 15k a year each child to educate. That cost of 30 to 40,000 equals or exceeds what they collect from me now in taxes. The Village goes from positive income flow from me and my property taxes, to at best breaking even and more likely losing money. “
