Brick NJ, Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal announced that a prominent Ocean County attorney who hosted a radio show and taught seminars on elder law was sentenced to prison today for stealing millions of dollars from elderly clients of his law firm and laundering the money through various bank accounts, including his attorney trust and business accounts. The victims generally did not have close relatives to guard their interests and in some cases suffered from dementia.
Robert Novy, 67, of Brick, N.J., was sentenced today to 10 years in state prison, including three years and four months of parole ineligibility, by Superior Court Judge Michael T. Collins in Ocean County. Novy pleaded guilty on July 27 to a charge of first-degree money laundering. In pleading guilty, Novy admitted that he stole millions of dollars from law clients. The state’s investigation revealed that he stole more than $3 million from at least two dozen victims.

TRENTON NJ, A Union County, New Jersey, man was ordered today to pay $8.6 million in restitution and serve six months of home incarceration for launching a cyber-attack on the Rutgers University computer network, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.
Paras Jha, 22, of Fanwood, New Jersey, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp to violating the Computer Fraud & Abuse Act. Judge Shipp imposed the sentence today in Trenton federal court.

Haskell NJ, A viral outbreak has left six children dead and 12 others sick at a New Jersey rehabilitation facility, according to health officials. The New Jersey Department of Health, says there have been 18 cases of adenovirus among pediatric residents at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, located in Haskell.
Adenoviruses are a family of viruses that can infect the tissue linings of the respiratory tract, eyes, intestines, urinary tract and nervous system. They are a common cause of illnesses ranging from a cold to bronchitis to pneumonia and even pink eye, particularly in young children. The children at Wanaque appear to have been more susceptible to serious infections due to their other medical conditions.

Trenton NJ, In an effort to educate the public about online privacy risks, Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal and the New Jersey State Police today announced 2017 statistics regarding data breaches affecting New Jersey residents. The statistics showed that 958 data breaches were reported to State Police in 2017, a 41 percent increase from the 676 breaches reported to State Police in 2016. During 2017, the Attorney General’s Office also over saw a number of significant data privacy investigations, which resulted in $4.8 million in civil settlements with the State.
The single largest data breach reported in 2017 involved Equifax, which affected more than 4 million New Jersey residents. In total, the 958 breaches reported in 2017 affected more than 4.38 million accounts belonging to New Jersey residents( the vast majority of which resulted from the Equifax breach). In 2016, the first year that the Attorney General’s Office collected such data, approximately 116,000 New Jersey account holders were affected by data breaches.
As part of today’s announcement, and in conjunction with National Cybersecurity Month, the Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) is also releasing tips for New Jersey residents about how they can better protect their sensitive personal information. The effort is part of a broader effort by Attorney General Grewal to strengthen the state’s cybersecurity protections, and follows an announcement earlier this year the creation of a Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Section within the Division of Law (DOL) to investigate data privacy cases and advise state agencies on related matters.

Ridgewood NJ, according to the Garden State Initiative (GSI) analysis of September’s monthly jobs report for New Jersey showed continued, smaller gains for a state economy that is still struggling to regain last year’s workforce losses .
The bad news is that while New Jersey’s workforce grew in September, it is still smaller by 30,100 individuals compared to September last year. The state’s current workforce is also smaller than the state’s average workforce size in 2008.

Ridgewood NJ, New Jersey Senator, Cory Booker, accused of sexual assault by a man . Saturday an anonymous Twitter handle known as deep throat ( https://twitter.com/TheeDeepThroat ) published a very unsettling and detailed account of an alleged interaction that took place in a bathroom years ago between him and New Jersey Senator, Cory Booker.
In the allegation the man claimed he complimented Senator Booker ,who allegedly followed him into the bathroom, aggressively approaching him for oral sex in a stall. The man declined and escaped.

MARLBORO NJ, the League of Women Voters is holding a candidates’ forum at the Marlboro synagogue this Sunday October 21st . The candidates seeking to represent New Jersey’s sixth congressional district will be there. The incumbent Rep. Frank Pallone, a Democrat who has long represented the area, and challenger Rich Pezzullo, the conservative Republican who is looking to unseat him.
Rep. Pallone and Pezzullo confirmed they will be there. The candidates will be talking about the issues and fielding questions from the public. Pallone has represented New Jersey’s sixth district for years, which stretches from the Woodbridge area into New Brunswick and Aberdeen Twp. and down into Marlboro. It also hugs the northern New Jersey coast and includes the towns of Long Branch and Asbury Park. It’s a reliably blue district, having voted Democratic for years.
