Somerset County Man Sentenced to 46 Months in Prison for International Arms Trafficking

Trenton NJ, A Somerset County, New Jersey, man was sentenced today to 46 months in prison for illegally exporting from the United States a wide array of weapons, including assault rifles, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.

Pedro Vergara, 55, of Branchburg, New Jersey, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael A. Shipp to an information charging him with one count of smuggling firearms from the United States. Judge Shipp imposed the sentence today in Trenton federal court.

NJ STATE TROOPER ARRESTED ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGE

TRENTON NJ, A New Jersey state trooper was arrested today for allegedly engaging in a sexually explicit email exchange with an adult woman about a prepubescent girl, during which the trooper and the woman allegedly exchanged sexually explicit photos, including a photo of the young girl.

Trooper Jeffrey Reitz, 47, of Williamstown, N.J., was arrested today on a charge of third-degree possession of child pornography. Reitz was held in custody pending a first appearance in court. Reitz, who is assigned to the Commercial Carrier Safety Inspection Unit, has been suspended by the New Jersey State Police.

New Jersey Could be Devastated by Irresponsible Recreational Marijuana Laws

I once again seek to be the voice of reason in this nonsensical legislative wrangling of pivotal marijuana legislation. I do so because we are at the crossroads of a decision that will change the face of New Jersey forever. We are not talking about Colorado or another state with a vast expanse of open land. Our state has the densest population per square mile in the nation. It sits between two major metropolitan centers, is streaked with high speed turnpikes and parkways and carpeted with urban areas and their suburbs where families could be devastated by irresponsible recreational marijuana laws.

Two Men Wanted in Connection to the Spring Hill Wildfire

Spring Hill NJ, The New Jersey State Police is seeking the public’s assistance with identifying two men wanted in connection to the Spring Hill wildfire in Burlington County.

Detectives believe that the two men pictured below may have information about the fire that began on March 30 and consumed more than 11,000 acres of forest in Washington and Woodland Townships.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant First Class Shaun Georgeson of Tuckerton Station at 609-296-3132.

Frustrated by rising numbers of undocumented immigrants arriving at the southern border and a failure to get Congress to fully fund a U.S.-Mexico border wall, Trump taunted Democrats by dangling the possibility of an influx of illegal immigrants into their communities.

Trenton NJ, In light of recent reports highlighting New Jersey’s continued economic decline, Senator Joe Pennacchio (R-26) today urged Governor Phil Murphy to stop pushing to legalize pot and start pushing for job creation.

Pennacchio’s call for action follows news that New Jersey lost 7,700 jobs in February, according to new data by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. New Jersey also lost at least 2,300 jobs in December of 2018 alone.

Additionally, this week the NJBIA released their 2019 Climate Analysis, which indicated that New Jersey continues to have the worst business climate, highest property taxes, highest sales tax, and highest income tax in the region.

Protesters Hit Trenton for ‘March Against Murphy’ protest

Trenton NJ, Hundreds of New Jersey residents came to Trenton Tuesday for the “March Against Murphy” in a protest against Gov. Phil Murphy, his administration and his policies.

News 12 reported that over 400 demonstrators marched from the New Jersey State House to the governor’s temporary office and then to Trenton’s World War II Memorial to express their disapproval of many of the Democratic governor’s policies. Many wore yellow construction vests as a nod to protesters in France who wore similar vets in their protests against higher fuel taxes.

Bill Allowing State Lottery Winners to Remain “Anonymous” Clears Assembly Panel

Ridgewood NJ, To protect the safety of lucky New Jerseyans who win the lottery, Assemblyman John Burzichelli sponsored legislation allowing for winners of the State Lottery to remain anonymous. The bill cleared the Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee Thursday.

“While winning the lottery is a dream come true for those lucky individuals who are able to call themselves winners, they are sometimes hounded and harassed as a result of their newfound wealth and fame,” said Burzichelli (D-Cumberland, Gloucester, Salem). “In some cases, lottery prizes have resulted in winners being robbed and even killed, such as in places like Chicago, Georgia and West Virginia. If a lottery winner wishes to remain anonymous, they should have the right to not have their information publicly distributed.”

Ridgewood NJ, Each year the EPA releases pollution data to help inform the public on how to get that pollution reduced. In 2017, nearly 6 million pounds of toxins were released into the New Jersey air as the state’s 9 million residents breathed it in, keeping the state among the country’s worst polluters. This is especially dangerous to residents all across the state who are already overburdened by pollution and continue to choke on dirty air. Many of the toxic chemicals emitted into our air, water and land are carcinogens, damaging our health and environment.

Trenton NJ, In response to a poster for airline JetBlue’s Black History Month campaign “honoring” Joanne Chesimard, who was convicted of murdering New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster in 1973, Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez released the following statement. Chesimard escaped from prison in 1979 and fled to Cuba, where she remains at large.

“There’s no place in Black History Month, or any month for that matter, for us to pay tribute to a convicted murderer,” said Jimenez (D-Bergen, Hudson). “Joanne Chesimard made a career out of seeking out police officers to harm or even kill, and she tragically took the life of one of our brave state troopers. And as a woman of Cuban descent, it’s devastating to know she has been able to live free under political asylum in Cuba for decades. Chesimard does not belong on a poster or a pedestal. She belongs in an American prison. JetBlue’s actions were insensitive and extremely disrespectful to the heroic men and women in law enforcement and Trooper Foerster’s family. I’d like to express my full support for the New Jersey State Police and their outstanding efforts to honor Trooper Foerster’s memory and keep our communities safe.”

NJDOT advising motorists to plan ahead for Wednesday’s storm

TRENTON NJ, New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today issued a Winter Weather Congestion Alert and are implementing the Department’s Business Day Protocol for Wednesday, February 20, based on the forecast for expected snow and freezing rain beginning tomorrow morning and continuing throughout the day, which may result in difficult driving conditions, particularly during the Wednesday evening commute.

The Department is advising motorists to plan ahead and to consider curtailing travel tomorrow if possible. Snow is expected to begin tomorrow morning in South Jersey and move north. It is expected to intensify in the afternoon and at some point it is expected to turn to freezing rain, which may cause difficult driving conditions.

NJDOT will be deploying the necessary resources in advance of the storm and is coordinating its response with NJ Transit and the toll road authorities to ensure the best response for New Jerseyans.

Governor Murphy Declares State of Emergency

TRENTON NJ, Today, Governor Phil Murphy declared that New Jersey will enter a state of emergency beginning Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at 5:00 a.m. ahead of the anticipated winter storm. The storm is expected to start tomorrow and continue throughout the day. Executive Order No. 57 declares a state of emergency across all 21 counties in New Jersey, allowing resources to be deployed throughout the state during the duration of the storm.

“As a winter storm is expected to impact our State, we are urging residents of New Jersey to drive with caution and use their best judgment during this time,” said Governor Murphy. “We are actively monitoring the storm and are prepared to deploy any resources available to ensure the safety of the roads.”
