Clara Nibot Cuban-American anti Castro Republican Activist Dies
Tuesday, May 21, 2014

Clara Nibot, a Cuban-American Republican activist and a former president of the Bergen County Hispanic Republican Club, died yesterday. She was from Bergenfield.

“She was an activist and very much involved in Republican Party politics until she got sick but until she got sick you could always count on her to be there and she will be sorely missed,” said Bergen County GOP Chairman Bob Yudin.

Ms. Nibot challenged Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-37) in the 2007 general election.

Fernando Alonso, the current President of the Bergen County Hispanic Republican Club described Ms. Nibot as a Cuban  anti-Castro dissident who helped many young Republicans. “Including me, many years ago,” Alonso said. “She was a good, kind, wise woman.”

In an interview which appeared in the Record in January of 2011, Clara was quoted as having arrived in the US in 1961 from Cuba as a tourist.  She never returned to Cuba or saw her father, a doctor, who was not permitted to leave Cuba.

She was an outspoken advocate for her people and often pointed out the human rights violations so many continue to endure there.  “… But there are still human rights violations and people are being put in jail and persecuted because they believe in free speech,” Nibot said in 2011. “No one is holding him [Castro] accountable.”

Clara was born in Havana, Cuba. She lived in Irvington before moving to Bergenfield 43 years ago.  She was a Systems Analyst for Mason Tenders District Trust Fund, New York City for 30 years, prior to retiring in 2004.

Clara was the beloved wife of the late Jose Nibot who died in 2005, the devoted mother of Ismael (Caroline) Nibot and Sylvia Claffey, and loving sister of Alicia Burt. She will be sadly missed by her cherished granddaughters, Olivia and Megan Nibot.

The family will welcome friends Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m. onThursday, May 22nd at the French Funeral Home, 161 Washington Avenue in Dumont.

Funeral mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. at St. John’s R.C. Church, 29 North Washington Ave, Bergenfield.

Internment at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.

3 years Later Newark Issues Public Health Notice About Drinking Water

The city of Newark is notifying residents that its water department failed to properly monitor turbidity, or cloudiness, in its drinking water for a period of three years, which may have put people’s health at risk.

The city says the water that flowed from the nearby Charlottesburg reservoir wasn’t properly checked for turbidity, which could indicate the presence of bacteria, viruses and parasites, from at leastJanuary 2011 through April 17, 2014.

As a result, it’s possible some disease-causing organisms weren’t detected in the drinking water over the past three years, which could have caused symptoms like nausea, cramps, diarrhea and headaches.

If residents are continuing to experience those symptoms, they should go to a doctor for evaluation, officials say.

The city says there is no emergency, and that the violation was addressed and is not ongoing.

Newark’s water department had “corrected substandard monitoring and recording procedures in their turbidity meters,” and the city has been required by the state DEP to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the water treatment plant.

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD – They waited 15 months to have their say and on Tuesday night two dozen residents stood before the planning board to explain how they feel about The Valley Hospital’s plan to renovate and nearly double in size.
For the most part, they don’t like it.

Out of two dozen residents who spoke, six were in favor of the proposal to grow from 562,000 square feet to 995,000 square feet and build a 245,000-square-foot parking garage.

“Valley is one of Ridgewood’s crown jewels,” said Rurik Halaby. “People talk about the quality of life in Ridgewood. I would think health is a primary component of quality of life. Having a world class hospital in our backyard goes a long way to ensure that.”

U.S. utility’s control system was hacked, says Homeland Security

By Jim Finkle

BOSTON (Reuters) – A sophisticated hacking group recently attacked a U.S. public utility and compromised its control system network, but there was no evidence that the utility’s operations were affected, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS did not identify the utility in a report that was issued this week by the agency’s Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team, or ICS-CERT.

“While unauthorized access was identified, ICS-CERT was able to work with the affected entity to put in place mitigation strategies and ensure the security of their control systems before there was any impact to operations,” a DHS official told Reuters on Tuesday.

What science, technology, engineering, and math (“STEM”) Shortage?

What science, technology, engineering, and math (“STEM”) Shortage?
The sector isn’t seeing wage growth and has more graduates than jobs.
By Steven Camarota

The idea that we need to allow in more workers with science, technology, engineering, and math (“STEM”) background is an article of faith among American business and political elite.

But in a new report, my Center for Immigration Studies colleague Karen Zeigler and I analyze the latest government data and find what other researchers have found: The country has well more than twice as many workers with STEM degrees as there are STEM jobs. Also consistent with other research, we find only modest levels of wage growth for such workers for more than a decade. Both employment and wage data indicate that such workers are not in short supply.

Reports by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), the RAND Corporation, the Urban Institute, and the National Research Council have all found no evidence that STEM workers are in short supply. PBS even published an opinion piece based on the EPI study entitled, “The Bogus High-Tech Worker Shortage: How Guest Workers Lower U.S. Wages.” This is PBS, mind you, which is as likely to publish something skeptical of immigration as it is to publish something skeptical of taxpayer subsidies for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward on Pedestrian Safety

Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward on Pedestrian Safety
May 20,2014
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ ,The Ridgewoood Police Department conducted a Pedestrian Decoy program to enforce crosswalk safety , in the area of Franklin Ave today. This gave us an opportunity to stop by and and talk traffic safety with Chief John Ward .

Chief Ward felt that while things are not perfect , the Village has come a long way the last couple of years in the area of pedestrian safety in the Central Business District . Residents seem to have gotten the message to make that  extra effort and be mindful of cars , bicycles and pedestrians .

The last couple of years has seen a downward trend in pedestrian/car  traffic accidents.

The Ridgewood Police announce the Pedestrian Decoy program on Facebook and the Chief goes out of his way to wear brightly colored shits so as to give everyone early warning. Still a few people manage to not heed the warnings .

Chief Ward told us that driving under 15 miles per hour greatly reduces the probability of a lethal accident and was lobbying the Village Council for reduced speed limits in the CBD.

The Chief then  went on to talk about  the Ridgewood Police youth  out reach and reminding us that kids make up 30% of the Village population.

The Ridgewood Community Policing Youth Ambassador/Leadership has just been recognized by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and is a featured program in their Youth Focused Policing Resource Center.

A Discussion with Steve Lonegan

A Discussion with Steve Lonegan

We’ve already heard from CD3 GOP contender Tom MacArthur, Save Jerseyans, so with only two weeks left to go in a particularly bruising battle to replace Jon Runyan in Congress, I was paid a visit on Monday afternoon by none other than MacArthur’s seasoned challenger, Steve Lonegan.

Steve and I had a friendly, casual but predictably honest chat touching on everything from his primary opponent and the value of “RINO” hunting to repealing Obamacare and… his love of salt water fishing. It’s likely the second-to-last best chance you’ll have to hear from the former mayor and AFP-NJ leader before June 3rd (there’s a radio debate set for later this week).

Corrections officer, Georgia inmate accused of trying to bilk Bergen County residents

Corrections officer, Georgia inmate accused of trying to bilk Bergen County residents

MAY 19, 2014, 7:19 PM    LAST UPDATED: MONDAY, MAY 19, 2014, 7:19 PM

THE RECORD

A corrections officer and an inmate from Georgia are accused of being part of a larger conspiracy that involves people posing as law enforcement officers from Bergen County and elsewhere, and asking people to pay court fines to avoid being arrested, authorities said in a news release Monday.

The conspiracy has spread to a dozen states and included calls from people claiming to be from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office asking for payment from people who failed to make court appearances or who missed jury duty, Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino said.

The investigation led to the arrest of Clarinda K. Carter, a corrections officer at Wheeler State Correctional Facility in Alamo, Ga., and Covian J. Camp, an inmate at Autry State Prison in Pelham, Ga., Saudino said.

Authorities believe Carter and Camp “collaborated to target Bergen County residents” and are “the first two arrests in a nationwide scam that we believe will lead to many more arrests in the coming months,” Saudino said.

They each were charged with two counts of second-degree theft by extortion and two counts of fourth-degree impersonating a law enforcement officer, Saudino said.

Christie-backed constitutional amendment to allow NJ judges to deny bail advances

Christie-backed constitutional amendment to allow NJ judges to deny bail advances

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie’s plan to make major changes to the state’s bail system — first proposed more than two years ago — is finally gaining steam in the state Legislature.

The state Senate budget committee today advanced a measure that would ask voters to amend the state constitution so judges would be allowed to deny bail to defendants who pose a risk to public safety or may flee.

New Jersey used to deny bail only to defendants charged with offenses punishable by the death penalty. But when the state eliminated capital punishment in 2007, all defendants became eligible for bail.

“You constantly see prosecutors arguing a defendant is a risk to the public,” said state Sen. Nicholas Scutari (D-Union), a sponsor, who is also a municipal prosecutor. “There’s a big need. I’ve had a lot of meetings with criminal judges as well. They all agree it’s time we need to make a change.”

Christie first proposed the amendment in 2012, when he also called for expanding the drug court program with the aim of avoiding jail time for all first-time drug offenders. Although the Legislature quickly took up the drug court bill, the bail resolution stalled until this year. (Friedman/Star-Ledger)

Philanthropists needed for hospitals looking to upgrade facilities, advance care

Philanthropists needed for hospitals looking to upgrade facilities, advance care

By Beth Fitzgerald
May 19, 2014 at 1:07 PM

For hospitals that depend on generous donations to modernize their facilities and deliver the latest advances in clinical care — philanthropists are a major lifeline.

This was underscored earlier this month when Ridgewood’s Valley Health System recognized David F. Bolger for giving $40 million in philanthropic gifts since 1999.  And as the president of Bolger & Co. Inc., a real estate and investment firm in Ridgewood with real estate holdings throughout the U.S., he divides his time between Ridgewood and Sarasota, according to Valley.

Audrey Meyers, chief executive of the Valley Hospital and Valley Health System said, “Words cannot express how deeply appreciative we are of David’s extraordinary support. We thank him for the impact his incredible generosity will have on the hundreds of thousands of patients who will be treated at the hospital for years to come.”

“David Bolger has one guiding philanthropic principle: he wants to ensure his generosity benefits the greatest amount of people,” said Anastasios Kozaitis, president of The Valley Hospital Foundation. “His extraordinary support of Valley is only one facet of his philanthropy. His is a philanthropic spirit that looks to enhance and at times transform the communities for which he cares. David’s giving has allowed Valley to offer our patients the best technology that medicine has to offer. His philanthropy has saved countless lives.”

Bolger’s largest gift was $30 million in 2008 for the renovation of the main campus. Kozaitis said Valley is working with the Ridgewood Planning Board on a revised a redevelopment plan. The board had earlier rejected Valley’s original plan.
