License-plate readers let police collect millions of records on drivers

License-plate readers let police collect millions of records on drivers
Jun 26, 2013

When the city of San Leandro, Calif., purchased a license-plate reader for its police department in 2008, computer security consultant Michael Katz-Lacabe asked the city for a record of every time the scanners had photographed his car.

The results shocked him.

The paperback-size device, installed on the outside of police cars, can log thousands of license plates in an eight-hour patrol shift. Katz-Lacabe said it had photographed his two cars on 112 occasions, including one image from 2009 that shows him and his daughters stepping out of his Toyota Prius in their driveway.

That photograph, Katz-Lacabe said, made him “frightened and concerned about the magnitude of police surveillance and data collection.” The single patrol car in San Leandro equipped with a plate reader had logged his car once a week on average, photographing his license plate and documenting the time and location.

At a rapid pace, and mostly hidden from the public, police agencies throughout California have been collecting millions of records on drivers and feeding them to intelligence fusion centers operated by local, state and federal law enforcement.

Ridgewood tries out Mobi-Chair to improve access to public pool
Published: June 25, 2013 6:41 PM

RIDGEWOOD – Staff at a public pool in Ridgewood are trying out a device that will allow disabled residents to access the historic Graydon Pool.

Last month, the town was considering building a new ramp into the pool to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

A group of residents fought against that proposal, which would have included a concrete ramp built near the pool.

Did Mayor Paul Aronsohn pressure the Ridgewood News to withdraw a letter to the editor ?
June 26, 2013
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ , The question is did Mayor Paul Aronsohn pressure the Ridgewood News to with draw a letter to the editor?

A Ridgewood blog investigation suggests that Mayor Aronsohn  intervened and looked to squelch a recent letter to the editor critical of his public handling the “Tom Richie issue , Extel Communication issue.

The letter writer claims that after she received the usual phone call to confirm from the Ridgewood News  ,  and she forwarded a copy to all the members of the Village council . At the June 12th  she was approached by Mayor Aronsohn and asked to retract the letter because it contained some “mis-information” . The letter writer kindly declined . On June 14th she was contacted by the Ridgewood News assistant editor and told the letter “needed some fact check verification”  and was being held up. Then she received an email from the editor who had been out of town and he basically said he would print it and that he was sorry for any inconvenience. at this point she told him not to bother because of the time lag.

This all begs the question  Did someone call the News on Thursday,June 13th and asked that the letter be withheld ? If so then it brings up two issues first is that some one pressured the Ridgewood News  to retract the letter  and the second is that the paper succumbed to the pressure.

Like the letter writer we dont believe that being approached by the mayor to withdraw a letter and the fact that it was withdrawn is a coincidence.

Documents show IRS also screened liberal groups

Documents show IRS also screened liberal groups
By ALAN FRAM
— Jun. 24 8:48 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service’s screening of groups seeking tax-exempt status was broader and lasted longer than has been previously disclosed, the new head of the agency acknowledged Monday. Terms including “Israel,” ”Progressive” and “Occupy” were used by agency workers to help pick groups for closer examination, according to an internal IRS document obtained by The Associated Press.

The IRS has been under fire since last month after admitting it targeted tea party and other conservative groups that wanted the tax-exempt designation for tough examinations. While investigators have said that agency screening for those groups had stopped in May 2012, Monday’s revelations made it clear that screening for other kinds of organizations continued until earlier this month, when the agency’s new chief, Danny Werfel, says he discovered it and ordered it halted.

The IRS document said an investigation into why specific terms were included was still underway. It blamed the continued use of inappropriate criteria by screeners on “a lapse in judgment” by the agency’s former top officials. The document did not name the officials, but many top leaders have been replaced.

Lawns are still being watered despite “Monday Water Ban “

Lawns are still being watered despite “Monday Water Ban “

It’s Monday, June 24 and people are still watering lawns throughout Ridgewood and Glen Rock today regardless of the “Monday watering ban.”

Here’s an idea:  Program the Computer Aided Dispatch equipment at Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch reminding dispatchers at 90 minute intervals to broadcast messages to Ridgewood and Glen Rock radio motor patrol units each Monday to be on the lookout for lawn watering violators and to issue summonses.

Central Dispatch touts their deployment of state of the art equipment; why not use it for something simple?

Readers claim Valley “experts ” offer nothing more than job interviews

Readers claim Valley “experts ” offer nothing more than job interviews

In the end, it doesn’t matter what kind of precautions are taken by Valley hospital or to what degree Valley’s hired experts sugar-coat their presentations (re: job interviews). Our neighborhoods, and lives, will be wrecked if this expansion happens. How do we know this? We live here, day in, day out.

We see what happens to the neighborhood when there is minor street or utility work being done (it is paralyzed). We see what happens when it rains (the streets are choked with traffic). Experts talk the big talk about following safety regulations and deferring to state guidelines, but we see the plumes of diesel exhaust, daily, coming from the trucks that currently make deliveries to Valley

How can anyone who lives here believe that this expansion won’t have a disastrous affect on our village?

JET-LAG CURE?

dv370009a.jpg

LE BOURGET, France (AP) — Here’s a look at some innovations from this week’s Paris Air Show:

JET-LAG CURE?

You know how you feel — and look — when you get off a trans-Atlantic flight? Exhausted, blood-shot eyes, swollen ankles. Partially that’s jet-lag. But partially that’s because you’ve effectively been up a mountain for several hours, with all that entails, including increased heart rate and shortness of breath.

Some manufacturers are working to reduce those effects — thanks to new composite materials that are more fatigue-resistant themselves. Currently, commercial jets fly at between 35,000 and 45,000 feet and pressurize their cabins to bring what your body feels down to around 8,000 feet.

But Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner, which is primarily made of composites, brings you down to 6,000 feet. Normal, aluminum-built planes could be pressurized to that level, too, but they would take more of a beating to do so and would have a shorter lifespan. If you’re really rolling in it, private jets, like the new Gulfstream, will do you one better: life in the cabin is below 5,000 feet.

Rep. Scott Garrett reintroduced the LEARN Act to return education control back to the states

Rep.Scott Garrett reintroduced the LEARN Act to return education control back to the states
June 22,2013
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, On Monday, Rep.Scott Garrett reintroduced the Local Education Authority now the (LEARN) Act, H.R. 2394, to return education control back to the states.  Garret believes it is in the best interest of our students and our country for parents and local authorities to be in charge of education.

The invasion of the federal government on the reserved powers of the states to set their own education standards has been going on for decades.  And, in the process, all across the nation, parents, teachers, administrators, town school boards, and local elected officials—the people closest to and most directly responsible for the students—have been shut out of the process.

If we are truly interested in transforming our public education system, we need to remove Washington bureaucrats from the equation.  Control and accountability should be in the hands of people who can truly produce change in the areas where it is needed the most.

The LEARN Act will work in three steps:

1.   States Opt Out—A state arrives at an independent decision that the administrative requirements and the burden of compliance is not worth the amount of federal education aid it receives from the Department of Education and the state elects to opt out.

2.   Funding Calculated—The Secretary of the Treasury determines which states have opted out and determines how much federal funding the state is eligible to receive under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

3.  Tax Credits Awarded—The taxpayers of the opt-out states receive a tax credit proportionally equal to the taxpayers’ state tax burden.

Reintroduction of this important bill is just step one.  Now it’s time for Congress to do its work and pass the LEARN Act.  New Jersey’s students, and students all across the country, deserve it.
