The Western Spring : The War on PC Culture

Ridgewood_-4th_of-_July_theridgewoodblog

BY RICHARD FERNANDEZ JANUARY 10, 2016

News that CAIR has demanded an apology from Donald Trump for evicting a Muslim protester at his rally and reports that left-wing protesters and police have turned out in force to bottle up “far-right” demonstrators in Germany bookend a single story.  It’s on — the long-awaited fight against PC orthodoxy is finally on. Trump is unlikely to apologize, and CAIR is even more unlikely to back down.  With 3 million Middle Eastern and African refugees due to arrive in Europe this year, the clashes between German protesters are only likely to intensify.

The commotion you hear is not going to stop, it will only get worse. The Western Spring is finally here, and before it’s done it threatens to change everything.

The tension between the forces of political correctness and the pent-up forces of repressed cultural traditions is now bursting like a spring wound up beyond containment.  Things may start slowly at first but ramp up rapidly, mirroring Cornelius Ryan’s famous description of the Berlin Philharmonic’s last performance as the Red Army stood at the gates of Berlin.

The drum beat was almost imperceptible. Softly the tubas answered. The muffled drum roll came again. Low and ominously the tubas replied. Then the massed basses came alive and the awesome grandeur of Die Götterdämmerung rolled out from the Berlin Philharmonic … it told of the evildoing of the gods, of Siegfried on his funeral bed of fire … with cymbals crashing and drums rolling, the orchestra thundered to its climax: the terrible holocaust that destroyed Valhalla

Actually the last performance of the doomed orchestra “was of Brünnhilde’s Immolation Scene at the end of the opera.” Ryan’s word painting may get the history wrong but nevertheless gets the analogy right.  It’s the twilight of the gods.  In 1945 the musicians wore escape clothes under their overcoats because it had been arranged for them to escape toward the American lines as soon as the performance ended.

Seventy years later, the question facing people caught in the middle is where to run. There is nowhere obvious. In Europe, Ross Douthat argues, all exits are temporarily blocked.  The left has destroyed the middle, leaving only a choice of extremes.  “Just last week Merkel rejected a proposal to cap refugee admissions (which topped one million last year) at 200,000 in 2016.”

Public Safety : Jerry Speziale’s new beat covers two states

HAZLETON, Pa. — A few weeks ago, the phone rang at Jimmy’s Quick Lunch, a popular café that has dished out soup, sandwiches, eggs, neighborly advice and gossip in the center of this rugged former coal-mining town for almost seven decades.

The caller was not placing a takeout order for one of Jimmy’s legendary hot dogs with gravy fries and a milk shake. Instead, Paterson’s civilian police director, Jerry Speziale, was on the line asking if Jimmy’s longtime owner, James Grohol, could give him the name of a neighborhood crime watch activist.

“Maybe he just wanted to get a feel for things,” Grohol said the other day as he reflected on the phone call while flipping burgers in Jimmy’s kitchen.

That the top police administrator in New Jersey’s third-largest city, 115 miles away, would be interested in a neighborhood crime watch in Hazleton, Pa., may seem odd. But phone calls from Speziale are likely to become commonplace now that he has agreed to run Hazleton’s Police Department as its interim chief while he continues to supervise policing in Paterson.

Moonlighting during off-hours has long been a fact of police life. Some officers work nights as private security guards. Others offer advice as consultants or spend weekends as contractors, driving buses or doing other non-police jobs. Some teach college-level classes in policing and criminal justice.

But the idea of the top law enforcement administrator in one city running a department in another state may present a whole new twist on police moonlighting and raises potential conflicts, some experts say.

Updated at 1:54: Revised to include comments from Gov. Abbott’s speech.

Gov. Greg Abbott, aiming to spark a national conversation about states’ rights, said Friday that he wants Texas to lead the call for a convention to amend the U.S. Constitution and wrest power from a federal government “run amok.”

“If we are going to fight for, protect and hand on to the next generation, the freedom that [President] Reagan spoke of … then we have to take the lead to restore the rule of law in America,” Abbott said during a speech at the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Policy Orientation that drew raucous applause from the conservative audience. He said he will ask lawmakers to pass a bill authorizing Texas to join other states calling for a Convention of States.

Along with the speech, Abbott released a nearly 70-page plan – part American civics lesson, part anti-Obama diatribe – detailing nine proposed constitutional amendments that he said would unravel the federal government’s decades-long power grab and restore authority over economic regulation and other matters to the states.

“The irony for our generation is that the threat to our Republic doesn’t come just from foreign enemies, it comes, in part, from our very own leaders,” Abbott said in a speech that took aim at President Obama, Congress and the judicial branch.

Readers Say Gwenn Hauck has absolutely no business representing Ridgewood in a lawsuit

Gwenn Hauck has absolutely no business representing us in a lawsuit. For crying out loud, this is glaringly apparent. This is not about what platform she ran for office on, this is not about whether she loves valley hospital. This is the fact that there is a major lawsuit against Ridgewood and one of the two elected official on the mediation is a person who donates big money to them. How can anyone not see the conflict here? She is supposed to be representing US against THEM in this lawsuit, but she funnels money to them.

I love how Mrs. Hauck and her apologists cite the letter of the law when pushing back on such an obvious conflict of interest. I have no problem with her supporting Valley – it’s her right. I also have no problem that she ran for office for the sole purpose of voting yes on the Valley expansion should it ever come to a vote before the Council. Her problem now is that Valley has sued the Village and she swore an oath to represent the best interests of the Village. It is impossible for her to do this given her adamant, long-standing and very public support of Valley. Even if Valley is not paying her, there is still a conflict.

Anyone who does not see this or admit to it is either dumb, playing dumb or unethical.

The truth about N.J.’s pension crisis and how to fix it

Next November, New Jerseyans will be asked to vote on a constitutional amendment to require the state government to make regular quarterly pension payments, which would put the state’s pension system — and the state of New Jersey itself — on the road to fiscal solvency within six years.

Saudi Arabia severs diplomatic ties with Iran

Lawrence of Arabia

By Bradford Richardson

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister on Sunday said Riyadh is severing diplomatic ties with Iran amid tensions between the regional rivals.

Adel al-Jubeir said in a news conference that the Iranian diplomatic mission has been given 48 hours to leave Saudi Arabia, according to multiple reports.

The announcement comes after Iranians stormed a Saudi embassy in Tehran on Saturday in retaliation for the execution of a prominent Shi’ite Muslim cleric.

Most of the 47 prisoners executed on Saturday in Saudi Arabia, a Sunni kingdom, were al Qaeda affiliates accused of taking part in terrorist attacks over the last decade.

Trump: Iran deal was so bad it’s suspicious

By Elliot Smilowitz

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump says the nuclear deal with Iran is so bad, he is close to wondering whether it was done poorly on purpose.

“It’s almost like there has to be something else going on,” he said Saturday night at a rally in Biloxi, Miss. “I don’t think there is, I just don’t think they’re competent.”

Trump said he couldn’t believe the U.S. would agree to a deal with Iran that did not include the return of Americans held prisoner in Iran.

“Who would make that deal?” he asked, suggesting Tehran was celebrating as the agreement was being negotiated.

The myth of the cop killing ‘epidemic’

By Michael Walsh

January 2, 2016 | 4:00pm

To hear the media tell it, America is in the grip of an unprecedented crime wave, an orgy of wanton murder in which heavily armed thugs randomly gun down innocent unarmed people, some of them teens, just for sport.

Except that these homicidal goons are wearing the blues and badges of American police departments.

It’s the narrative that’s given rise to the protest movement Black Lives Matter and to a growing public mistrust of the police in general. From Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., to the recent shooting of a middle-aged woman and a teen in Chicago, the body count seemingly keeps rising, exacerbating racial tensions and keeping the nation on edge. And each incident is breathlessly reported by a media determined to show that America remains deeply, irredeemably racist.

Last week, The Washington Post published a study of the police shootings that took place in 2015. Likely they intended the story to be shocking — as on Dec. 24, 965 people were killed by police! Instead, the report quells the notion that trigger-happy cops are out hunting for civilian victims, especially African-Americans. Among its key findings:

White cops shooting unarmed black men accounted for less than 4% of fatal police shootings.
In three-quarters of the incidents, cops were either under attack themselves or defending civilians. In other words, doing their jobs.
The majority of those killed were brandishing weapons, suicidal or mentally troubled or bolted when ordered to surrender.
Nearly a third of police shootings resulted from car chases that began with a minor traffic stop.

Nimr al-Nimr execution: Former Iraq PM al-Maliki says death will ‘topple Saudi regime’

Lawrence of Arabia

Elsewhere, demonstrators carrying pictures of the Shi’ite cleric were involved in a clash with police in the Bahraini village of Abu-Saiba

Harriet Sinclair

The former prime minister of Iraq, Nuri al-Maliki, has said that the execution of the prominent Shi’ite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by Saudi Arabia will be the downfall of the Gulf kingdom’s government.

Mr al-Maliki, who was prime minister of Iraq between 2006 and 2014, said in a statement that his countrymen “strongly condemn these detestable sectarian practices and affirm that the crime of executing Sheikh al-Nimr will topple the Saudi regime as the crime of executing the martyr al-Sadr did to Saddam,” referencing the death of another prominent cleric in Iraq in 1980.

Hundreds of armoured vehicles were sent to Qatif in Saudi Arabia to contain protests in response to the execution, while demonstrators in Bahrain have been tear-gassed.

Several protests have taken place in majority Shia Qatif and in Bahrain, following the execution of Sheikh al-Nimr and 46 others for ‘terrorism offences’.

Demonstrators carrying pictures of the Shi’ite cleric were involved in a clash with police in the Bahraini village of Abu-Saiba, where dozens were tear-gassed, according to witnesses.

Obama’s Gun Grab

Obama to impose new gun control curbs next week
By Juliet Eilperin January 1 at 3:35 PM

HONOLULU — President Obama will press ahead with a set of executive actions on guns next week despite growing concerns in the U.S. over terrorism that have dampened some Americans’ enthusiasm for tighter firearms restrictions, according to several individuals briefed on the matter.

The president will meet with Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch on Monday to finalize a series of new gun control measures, according to several individuals who asked for anonymity because the plan was not yet public, and announce his package of proposals shortly after that.

One of the main proposals Obama is poised to adopt–expanding new background-check requirements for buyers who purchase weapons from high-volume gun dealers -enjoys overwhelming public support: a Quinnipiac University poll in December found 89 percent supported background checks at gun shows and for online sales.

But Obama’s executive actions also come as Americans have become more fearful about the prospect of terrorist strikes and have voiced an openness to having ordinary citizens carry guns.

Reader says The CSAC is absolutely right when it identifies parking lots as dangerous places and anything that makes them a little safer would be a welcome change

parking garage cbd

The CSAC is absolutely right when it identifies parking lots as dangerous places and anything that makes them a little safer would be a welcome change. There is obviously be a cost associated with that plan – how much would parking lot re-striping cost? This is where the devil really IS in the details. As an example, how much change could there be in even one parking lot for the amount that was just spent on that electronic sign at the train station? There are ways to scrimp and save when something is really important.

Additionally, we can’t expect the police department to be everywhere all the time. It seems unrealistic to think they can provide full traffic safety coverage in the CBD all the time. An increased police presence would definitely be an effective deterrent and make people less likely to drive like maniacs, but in the meantime we must figure out some other ways to protect ourselves. Can’t we have (some version of) crossing guards in the most dangerous intersections at the most dangerous times of day? Crossing guards are not full-time and not paid much but, for the most part, drivers do yield to their directions. Reasonable hourly pay and no benefits makes it at least something to consider in the short term – until we figure out another way.

I think most of us appreciate Ridgewood for its relative safety, i.e. low crime rate. We have a town in which it’s actually possible to allow our kids to go downtown alone and walk around – in many ways a really nice throwback to an earlier era. However, even though we have that luxury, we have to worry that they will be killed by a car if we let them go. It’s sad and a waste of the police dept’s efforts to keep it a safe place.

Readers say Village Council Majority “Dismissiveness” to Residents Concerns Raises Voter Mobilization Drive

3 amigos in action Ridgewood NJ

What’s needed is MORE VOTERS who have a clue. Votes by only a small coterie of those who follow the issues WILL NOT CUT IT (viz. G. Hauck’s election in the first place, by a handful of votes). The amigos and their amigos know the importance of numbers of votes and will be out there lying their shirts off (lies of commission and omission) in “vote for parking” mode.

Start talking it up NOW. Please make sure your family members, neighbors, and friends are registered to vote–the number of the unregistered who won’t admit it is apparently staggering. Any 17-year-old who will turn 18 by the day of the next election can register in advance of that birthday, showing documentation. Talk to friends and neighbors who may be clueless; often they are thrilled to be told whom to vote for or not.

The three Boy Scouts who helped rescue their scoutmaster after he was mauled by a bear in a Morris County cave were hailed as heroes by state officials and the man’s wife on Monday.

While New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife officials said Christopher Petronino never should have entered the cave, they praised the actions of the trio who lured the black bear out with bananas and nuts while the scout leader was still inside, bleeding from wounds to his leg and scalp, on Sunday.

“They probably saved the man’s life,” said Dave Chanda, the Fish and Wildlife director. “That’s what Scouting is all about. It teaches them responsibility, and they showed it in this situation.”
