Christie’s options in filling Lautenberg’s seat

Lautenberg, an 89-year-old Democrat, died overnight. Christie, a Republican, has the authority under state and federal law to select someone to temporarily fill the vacancy pending a statewide election, according to a new opinion prepared by the New Jersey Office of Legislative Services, the non-partisan research arm of the state Legislature.
