Cicada hype a bust

Ridgewood NJ, This year’s brood of cicadas are currently popping up on the east coast — but not quite with the drama we initially expected.

The Cicada had been predicted to descend on the metro New York area around Memorial day like plague of Biblical proportions but colder weather and heavy rains seem to have keep the massive Cicada invasion in check.

While it is difficult to track cicadas because there was not a lot of research technology available seventeen years ago when the brood two group last came around , the large ugly bug so far seems noticeably absent from this years summer festivities

  1. Saw a few down in Bridgewater last weekend. None up here so far. Growing up in FL, I thought every year was a cicada year. It was nonstop from March to November. People would visit from Jersey and ask “WTF is that godawful non-stop NOISE?” and we would answer “what noise? Oh yeah the cicadas.”

    “Do they ever stop?”

    “Yes, in November”.

I didn’t even notice them unless one got lost and attached to my bedroom window screen three feet away from where I was trying to sleep. I was looking forward to them this year…remind me of growing up in a quieter (ironic) simpler place.

  2. My buddy in Summit has been overrun with Cicadas…..

    We should knock on Wood.

  3. All of the damaged and fallen trees this winter has helped to reduce the cicada population.

If a tree has fallen or a damaged tree has been removed, the local cicadas will die since they feed off tree roots.
