Commenting at the Ridgewood Village Council meetings via remote access – the bad news

Ridgewood NJ, the bad news very simply is that our mayor controls who gets the opportunity to speak. If he sees a name on the queue list that he doesn’t like, he can bypass that individual. The public doesn’t get to see who is waiting in queue; only the mayor and his IT support employee can see the list. We suppose if you’re booted and complain, a mysterious technical difficulty will be offered up as an explanation.

We’ve heard that the mayor has blocked certain individuals from viewing & commenting about posts on his official Facebook page. Who is to say that his alleged need to squelch dissidents won’t carry over to axing certain individuals from the remote public comments queue list? Let’s think about that. Hmm. Yep; it makes sense.

Now we understand why the mayor and Councilwoman Winograd (the mistress of squelching opposing views) were so hot to get remote access in place. They can’t cut you if you show up in person. But, you can get dropped from the remote access queue in a New York minute.

  4. Why are you even bother going to these meetings because you can’t voice your opinion, if they don’t like what you’re hearing, they silence you. Well, in my book, that is Nazism and I don’t take it. You’re better off, reaching out to other avenues to voice your opinion it’s your right you are United States citizen screw them if they don’t like it. Just remember anyone that goes into some sort of political board of some sort they need to understand that they have to listen to the people the voters.

  5. It seems to us that they don’t like residents voicing their opinion. Well guess what? So damn bad.

  6. Doesn’t the system have to be operated by someone who could prevent involuntary cut-off’s. if not done now, any chance (probably zero) of having that done?

  10. I have never been in favor of allowing call-in comments despite the convenience. Won’t go into the reasons now. But the way things are being done is not good.

Ordinarily not that many people are in line to speak. But sometimes there are plenty. Allowing only the first ten of them to speak before jumping to phone-in comments, then making people in the courtroom wait until seven phone-in comments have been made before they can speak, is wrong. Those at home are being given an enormous privilege and concession and must take second place to those who have made their way to Village Hall on a week night to make a statement that is important to them. The very fact that they are there means it matters. But from home you can say anything casually.

All would-be speakers at Village Hall, however many there are, should go first before any phone-ins are allowed. The callers are already at home, perhaps sipping cocoa in their jammies (since video is not required, as it should be), not having missed dinner or arranged for child care, not concerned about driving home from Village Hall in the dark or in bad weather. They can wait.

The new rule will also make that tenth spot suddenly significant, with people racing to get in line. We’re told to reduce the stress in our lives, not increase it.

The current setup may work as a disincentive to show up. Maybe that is part of the council’s goal.

Mr. Vagianos said the new format would be a work in progress. It is unfair. He needs to rethink it swiftly.

  12. So… all the reason to show up to the meeting in droves and shut them down right? Smile right back and screw them over. Fight fire with fire. This really is just so sad for Ridgewood… 🙁

  13. Any possibility that callers are being invisibly screened out would be unacceptable.

  14. Ridgewood is already in the dumper

  15. Ware did this Mom’s mafia come from. So stupid. They wish. Dream on. Talk about watching way too much t v .
They need a new name for their club.

    1. We used to call them the “social sluts” a few years back. They would do anything to improve their “status” with the HSA and sports groups crowd.

  16. Oh I know. What a joke. Half of them just would love to be in 201 magazine.
    Shit heads.

  17. Say goodbye to the stipends, and the mayor and council are pissed off
