It’s been a singular obsession for four years, stopping the reelection of Donald J. Trump by any means necessary. Destroy the ship, sicken the crew, deplete provisions, pollute the ocean… just get that whale!
Those who shared this obsession were happily surprised Wednesday morning, when a seemingly clear victory for Trump turned into a possible loss. But do they understand how this near defeat was achieved and what has been given up? Do they want to know? Can they avoid learning?
It seems like most of those who voted for Joe Biden, would have just as happily cast their vote for a hamster. Sadder still, since many times in US history it would have been better to have a hamster at the helm, they would have agreed to sacrifice their right to have a vote ever again. And maybe they have.
What has been sacrificed to get Donald Trump out of the White House and, more importantly, why? Maybe Herman Melville has the answer.
