Washington Twp NJ, Egyptian Pope Tawadros II of the Coptic Orthodox Church arrived in the United States on September 13, 2018 for a five-week visit to nearly 25 churches, including 13 in New Jersey.
One of his final stops was in Washington Township, Bergen County on October 1. The BCPONJ RDT was detailed to assist with security during his stop.
Pope Tawadros II is the 118th and current Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, succeeding the late Pope Shenouda III as leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. He took office on 18 November 2012, two weeks after being selected.
The RDT serves Bergen County and its 70 municipalities (the largest county in NJ with almost 1 million residents) to mobilize special resources as needed, or in proactive ways. RDT is a Shared Services project by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, select municipal police departments, and the State of New Jersey to multiply resources. Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office detectives assigned to RDT are specially trained in community policing, patrol, and counter-terrorism, as well as other backgrounds that make them highly useful and very effective.
